> BT3030 Bluetooth Drivers/Software?
Bookmark topic
As promised, I said I'd report on my successes/failures with the eBuyer BT3030 bluetooth Dongle...
Well, I don't know what is going on now - yesterday things were working quite well and although I had to keep re-establishing the connection, things basically seemed to work with my laptop running Win2K. I then took the dongle home and tried the same install process on my desktop (WinXP) and I was having alot of problems - at first, my phone seemed to think that my home desktop was still my laptop!?
Anyway, did some uninstalls, put on latest PC suite and then reinstalled bluetooth. Had to go out then so will try again at home tonight. Anyway, brought the dongle back to work to see if it still worked in the laptop, and now the software seems to be giving me all sorts of problems. It basically kept hanging whenever I try to click on "My device" or any of the other icons. It can see my phone, but I can't get a proper connection. I kept having to kill explorer all the time. And now it seems to be working again...sort of. The software that came on the CD seems quite good in terms of what it should let you do, but it just seems too unstable - when you try to connect the serial port it thinks that it has failed when really it has succeeded, etc.
A couple of questions then:
- Should I be able to set up the software on both my work laptop and home desktop and then just take the dongle around with me and communicate at each location as if I had two dongles? It was weird last night that my phone though my desktop was my laptop - surely the dongle doesn't have some sort of unique ID or anything that the phone stores?
- Is there any better bluetooth software that I can use with this dongle that is more stable and connects properly/doesn't hang? The only software I can find online specifically for this dongle is the one I have already got. Can I use any software/drivers for other dongles with the same chipset? If so, does anyone know which other dongles have the same chipset as this?
Any help appreciated - I will keep plugging away and see if I can make it work properly...

Well thanks for your post
I also bought this TECOM USB dongle from ebuyer.
When I opened it I put it straight on my Mac.
My Mac recognised it as a usb dongle but I got didn?t work at all ? did not even see my p800.
Ran up virtual pc 5 from os 9 and tried to install it ? but strangely it failed to find the drivers on the cd.
Virtual pc from OS X was no better either.
Anyway what interested me was that during the driver install it apparently updates the firmware on the dongle so I thought there could be hope to get it to work on my Mac.
Anyway tried to install it on my 2000 box at work. Everything seemed to run smoothly but the icon on the desktop fails to work properly. Also on restart I kept getting BTTray.Ink could not find the device/volume.
Anyway did manage somehow to get it to pair with my p800 and managed to send some contacts to the PC.
Note the range between the p800 and the PC felt about 10 meters - much better than the ~4 meters I was getting between my p800 and my work mates p800. This is really why I wanted a class 1 device.
The software definitely seems flaky ? if I tried to send something on the edge of the range then it stopped working altogether ? rebooting the PC got things back to normal.
Anyway on trying it again on my Mac at home everything seems a lot better. After a few tries I paired the 2 together and the range is very good. All the way from my study to my living room downstairs.
I am able to send files back and forth and it is a much better experience than I was getting on my work PC. That said there is not as much functionality as I was hoping particularly the ability to surf the Internet from my p800 to my broadband connection. Also syncing does not work yet though that should be sorted soon. (iSync 1.1 perhaps)
I wait and see how Mac OS develops its Bluetooth abilities but it seems promising so far.
