I can't take pictures of anything bright that is in sunlight. I know this is not a problem for most UK based P800 users but I tried to take a picture of a yellow painted store front (with darker windows) bathed in sunlight, and all i got was white-out! the saved picture is useless!

changing the brightness and contrast sliders was fiddly, and did not help the situation anyway. is this normal?

No it's not... the P800 has an excellent cam... specially in bright sunlight... I posted a gallery (P800 everyday shots) so you can see how it looks... http://www.photos.ph/jplacson

You have to wait a few seconds before taking the shot for the auto-gain to adjust properly.

Nope...I'm running R2D. Flickerfree is off... (use this only if you're taking shots under flourescent lights)

Everything else is set to default... EXCEPT white balance... the auto doesn't really work that well (I never expected it to) ... just set it to your current situation...indoor, outdoor, etc..)

And don't use the cam button to take the shot...tap the 'record' button on your screen with the stylus.

No enchancements were done to my photos, except for the "sunset" shot which was color-corrected to show the real hues that I saw when I took the shot. (It was dusk, so the little P800 cam could get the full color range)

Yup... the cam button is just too stiff... they should've just made all the buttons re-mappable (soft keys)

They could've made it this way by default: user should be able to change these functions
-Jog-dial (same functions as a d-pad/mouse) This one doesn't need to be re-mappable
-Jog-dial button (Yes/select)
-Blue button (No/back) - as a browser button, it's the most useless button on the P800!
-Cam button (Camera) .. they should've just called it an App Button, so you can customize it to launch your favorite app.

Yes there is... but you can only remap buttons to LAUNCH apps, not how the applications behave.

The main phone functions of the P800 aren't mapped well... it feels half-done. Example... when you view a Contact using just the Jog-dial, with the flip open...you can only scroll through the contact numbers... you cannot use the Jog-dial to scroll all the way down to view the addresses... you need the stylus for that...and you have to tap that little arrow on the side... that's dumb. You already have a scroll wheel... why didn't they make it function properly??!?
