Just got off the phone to SE, I was told the following;

The software needs to be updated, it is not a hardware problem.

Early next week, all the SE service centres in the UK will be able to update the software on the phones. Should take no more than 60 mins but depending on how many people are in the queue, you may need to leave the phone overnight.

In the UK they have categorically confirmed that it is not a hardware issue. Do you know what the issue is?

4 resistors placed under the left baseband shield lid, on the secondary side of the PCB, should be replaced according to this instruction.

@Cytech - could you quote your source for that please? It's getting crazy with half of the posts here saying it's software, and the other half saying it's hardware.

The theory I heard (on here I believe) that seemed to make sense was that the comfort noise (the very low level hiss that should be there to let you know you are connected) was incorrectly calibrated so was too loud. If that is indeed the case then it sounds like it could be more a software problem than hardware.

What you have said is correct. The feedback sound from the other end is usually filtered out, but hasn't been in this case, hence the software issue. 4 compnents is a lot to change in a phone I guess, and if that is the case, I would rather a new one once the problem has been cleared.

Shame that such a great phone will get blighted, someone's taking the hiss...

You are correct that it is to do with the 'comfort noise'. This is set by resistors which is why a hardware fix is implied.

They could however have changed the software to 'bump' up the rest of the audio and then reduce the volume levels but this would be more of a work-around than a fix.

The only way we will really know is when someone actually gets their T610 fixed.

my T610 is ont the service center at this moment to get fixed! i think it is a hardware problem! maby it can be coverd by software, but as phil.n say, that is mor to go aroud the problmen then to solve it!

Is the "comfort noice" there always when the speaker i used? Coz i get the hissing even when i play a midi file or play games.

I think there is something more then just a misscalibration...

Now why do you not get the hiss when using any form of handsfree?

Surely the resistors would still have an impact, wouldn't they?
