i accidentaly discovered this yesterday.
While your in the "add symbol" pop-up window, you can use the volume slider at the side of your phone to move the pointer to the righmost symbol of each line.
Moving the slider down, will move it to the line below your current position, move it up and it will go to the line above your current position.
Hope this helps.
I did it on a T39, it may or may not apply to all models. Feedback on this may help others.
