Mine is on Orange. Had no problems upgrading it, just phone SE for the nearest service centre, took it in and they upgraded it an hour.

yep the old rules about SE not upgrading Orange phones dont apply to the P800, any SE service centre should do it FOC for you no questions asked

Guess you've been one of the unlucky ones. I transferred from O2 to Orange when I bought my P800 two months ago. Aside from O2 screwing up the number porting (they only did a partial release) I have had no problems with Orange. Their customer support has always been answered by a human (after the usual 'press 1 for...' crap, but you expect that) and they were quicker and much more friendly than O2.
I'm on R1D and the phone is pretty stable (with a lot of apps and a 128MB Duo). I think the trick is to keep as much free memory in the phone as possible - maybe later versions will be a bit more forgiving.
I had a Nokia 9210 before this, and a 9110 before that. While they too were good phones I think the P800 has a better interface, more functionality and already more applications.
I hope you find what you're looking for, but doubt you'll get anything that does everything the P800 does (unless you wait another 6 months)...

If you get your phone unlocked then you will be able to upgrade, or just use any sim you want with it.
Where do you live? let me know if you want it unlocking,
Daz.
