> Can't send email! "Invalid To: address"
Bookmark topic
Thanks to some previous advice from these forums, I am now using a GPRS connection to access POP3 email on my P800.
I can receive email fine, but whenever I try and send a message to ANY email address, I receive a message telling me that the message has an "invalid To:, CC: or BCC: address". I have tried this so many times so I'm sure I'm not typing it wrong!
I have tried both with and without outgoing mail server authentication, and am still having no success. Can anyone suggest what the problem might be please?
Haydn
PS Although I now connect with my phone service provider's GPRS connection, I am still using my email/ISPs outgoing mail server address. Could this be causing the problem? In the past I have had trouble sending email through this server if I am not connected to it using that specific ISPs dial-up connection.

I've got exactly the same problem sending email using my ISP address. I have no problems using my email address from my Mobile Carrier or any others.
Any advice would be appreciated by many people.

Check your email before sending. I think it will happen in this order if you save to outbox and then do a Get&Send. During the check, the server will record your IP address, this will then give you a window to send email from that IP address. The other option is to use an SMTP server provided by your network, or some other public access SMTP server. Hope this works for ya

Many ISPs put restrictions on their SMTP servers which means that you MUST be dialled into their network to be able to send mail from their SMTP server. This is to rpevent their SMTP server being used as an open relay for spamming.
I think the error message you guys are getting is caused by this problem. Because you are using GPRS, your phones IP address is not within your ISPs permitted range, and your connection to the SMTP server gets rejected. The P800 error message is crap, but I reckon this is the cause of it.

Thanks - I thought as much! So I cunningly signed up to email from my mobile carrier, used the SE configurators to set this up on my P800, and then just transferred the Outgoing SMTP server address to my existing email profile which previously wasn't sending - and now it works!
cheers guys.

Hi
Sorry to bring this one up again but I'm a bit thick and I don't get the solution you guys have offered :
I have a GSM dial-up account called "virgin" and email settings with this.
I am also on the Orange network and have their email settings.
Now, if I want to be able to send and receive messages with my "virgin" account, then what do I need to change ?
Thanks for the walkthrough.
Greg

triggerhippie - Depends if you wanna connect using GRPS or your Virgin dialup.
If GPRS, you need to set up your mail client with a Virgin account, and you should find all the details fro stuff like their POP3 server in your Outlook setup. The one thing you will ned to do is use Oranges SMTP (outgoing mail) server to be able to send mail from your Vurgin account. Contact Oranges data helpdesk on 156 to find out the address of the server.
If you want to use your Vurgin dial-up acount your phone, you need to create a new data (dial-up) account in Control Panel, and then set up your Virgin e-mail account as above. In this scenario though, you should be able to use Virgins SMTP server as you'll be dialled up to their network.
Gimme a shout if you need any more info. Sorry if some of the info is a bit vague, but I no longer own a P800 (all hail the T610!!), so I'm working from memory

I found this problem with my work servers. I did find that I could use it ONLY if I did a Get&Send instead of a straight send. I did have SMTP authentication turned off, too.
Cheers,
