My local Phones4U have told me I can have a new T610 for free when they get a new batch in on Wednesday. Sounds like a great deal - only trouble is I'll have to transfer from Orange to Vodafone.

Depending on which threads you read, the Vodafone 'customisations' to the T610 software have either crippled the thing or are mild irritations. I really need to know the score before I cancel on Orange, whom I'm pretty happy with, and sign my life away with VF.

Questions:
1. Exactly which generic T610 funtionality has been overwritten\replaced by VF specific stuff?
2. How much phone memory is trapped by VF specific themes\backgrounds etc. that can't be removed? How much mem. do you really have to play with?
3. When you change theme, do the dodgy VF icons disappear from the main menu or is it just the colour that changes?
4. Is Vodafone Live! content really that bad? At the moment I use the Orange portal to check the latest sports news etc. and I'm pretty happy with that. I only use my bookmarks occasionally.
5. Does anyone have a week 22/23/24 phone which still 'hisses'?
6. Any other comments on VF services are welcome

Well, dude, I am not sure what functionality has been replaced, but I do NOT like having about ten different ways to log onto Vodafone Live. As someone who uses BBCi to check everything, that is generally my homepage, and it is annoying that I can't change that, though I did find a workaround.

I don't like the 2-colour icons that you get, and I don't like the fact that there is a soft-keyt control locked to vodafone live when on unlocked phones, I know it gives you a control menu for things like "Keylock" and stuff.

There is a load of wasted space (I would guess about 500kB) on locked pictures and stuff, the one which particularly annoys me being a Ferarri... why?

The games are shite, but they are all deletable and you can download others.

All in all, I have found that I can work round the customisations and because I have an iPAQ with Bluetooth, I am not too worried about the lack of memory space.

The phone is still great, and dead impressive. I like it way more than the old T68i.

500Kb on VF junk?! I didn't realise it was so much. How much does that leave you exactly?

Have you checked out the VF Live content? Do you get a portal when you can set up links to your favourite content?

This is still a dilemma man! The phone looks fantastic and best of all I can get it free, but it sounds like VF have done their best to ruin it.

Vodafone "alarm bells" I had a Vodafone handset for a week and took it back. The live content is a pile of cack, as there arn't actually any games available on it for the T610, and anything else you can pretty much get anywhere else for a lot less (plus it was a hissing model).

The menu customisations are very poor as the have changed all the icons to their generic branding, with the almost monotone appearance with things such as a dice for the games menu - unlike the original SE with have colour and include bitmap pics of the T610 which are quite nice.

They also have included not only their logo on the front base of the phone but also their sim card shaped icon on the back of the phone, a bit excessive i thought (the one on mine wasn't even straight.

I have to admit that their pricing plans were quite good though, and i liked the bundle option where you pay so much and you can use that credit to send either mms or sms or browse, unlike orange which have a seperate text option and mms option.

Originaly i was with Orange then tried out Vodafone, but i'm waiting for a new batch of non defective phones to come out before i get another one.

If i was going for Vodafone again i would probably get an unlocked one from somewhere like the carphone warehouse and then sign up for Vodafone, at least that way you don't have all the poor customisation, and reprogrammed keys (including the right soft one)..

Well, I have not explored VF live. I just don't like it. My first impression was that the content is totally limited, so I didn't bother setting anything up on it.
You can store your own bookmarks, so that is not so much of a problem.

The memory thing is a bit annoying. It leaves you about 1.4mB useable. Which everyone is moaning about, but, as I said, this is not really a problem if you use the phone with a computer: store the stuff on the computer and transfer as required.

Vodafone give you £2 a month to play with it.
I believe the idea is to entice you to sign up for a bundle so you can use it more .... sniggers

Why not port your number to tmobile, on the everytalk 200 plan the phone is free from practically everywhere, and although there is 1 image, and 1 tone you cant delete that are tmobile branded, it's not half as 'butchered' as Voda, Also having seen the orange t610 (looks like there having there own colour for the cases) and not liked it I'm sorta glad I ported accross, plus orange have gone to cr@p lately, didnt even care when I asked for the port codes for my 2 phones, that's nearly 90quid a month there losing just on me, and I AM porting the 30 numbers for my work account off orange (may try 3) because they just dont care!

Please remember, you are not signing with Vodafone through P4U. It's singlepoint, and it could be one of the biggest regrets in later life.
