People, I would welcome your comments on the following situation.

I'm running a contract with Orange. Decided to get myself a new handset and bought sim-free T610. Tried to set up the nice stuff - GPRS and MMS. GPRS works fine, but MMS is not working. I called Orange Customer Service and guess what the most unprofessional lady there told me? She said I CANNOT USE SOME OF ORANGE SERVICES BECAUSE I AM USING A NON-ORANGE MOBILE.

Did I miss something? Have Orange gone mad and forgot about Oftel and OFT? For me it is a clear case of unfair competition! I am still with my contract, my Orange handset rests in my desk - why cannot I use a different handset???

Basically, this means that I can never use a handset which I want - but only the Orange-supplied ones! Let's beat Orange to death!!! =)

They are correct. You entered into a contract whereby you agreed to use one of their phones (the one you bought off them) for the service and only that phone. Even if you are PAYG and haven't actually signed anything they will be part of their terms and conditions which you must abide by.

I got all the settings for Orange data and MMS and the rest of it sent when i got my 7210 and that is a non orange handset. That was in Dec / Jan. They dint even question it. Just told them i had got a new handset. Try again mate.

Send a complaint to Oftel via http://www.oftel.gov.uk/

and tell them exactly what you think is wrong.

within a few days you will be given a swift reply.....

Hopefully Orange will get in big trouble.

1. What is the point of selling/buying 'sim-free' mobiles - officially you cannot use them (at least on Orange, but I presume other providers have similar smallprint)?

2. When I buy Orange SIM card - what then? I presume I CAN use it in a non-Orange handset? If so - what is the difference between the two situations?

Nahhh, it smells bad...

Orange seem to have really gone down hill recently. They used to have THE customer service, however I phoned them up around a month ago as my contract was up for expiry this month, and asked them about price plans and new phones. I was basically trying to get my bill down from £80-90 per month (mine and missus phones on talk share), and they just could not care, and basically told me to goto the website and sort it out myself!, so what did I do, ported my number to tmobile.... When I asked for the porting codes the girl could not care I was leaving, and all she asked me was why I was leaving I said customer services had become bad since french telecom got involved, and she said I know what you mean!!!!!

Well we will see how they treat my business account (currently 33 phones) as that's due for renewal soon, and I doubt if it is going to stay with orange!

Orange aren't breaking any rules by not co-operating, they're oblidged to provide you with a sim card and hence access to any Orange services applicable to the phone you bought from them.

They aren't oblidged to provide you with any services other addition to voice calls (and possibly text messaging).

Look at it from Orange's point of view, why should they provide you with a service on a handset you didn't get from them? A complaint to Oftel probably won't get you anywhere - just call up again and ask once more, the next operator will probably just put the stuff you want on your account.
