Here's an old press release - I think they've done some stuff for Nokias but waiting for the UIQ port... would be nice... MS Media Player prolly won't happen as licensing issues exist (would compete against their own PocketPC platform which actually works quite nicely for streaming over GPRS or 802.11).

Orange have started to offer streaming videos from there smartphone wap site!
http://smartphone.orange.co.uk/promo/?id=P800_video_promo_page this buffers the video slightly but then olays it through the inbuilt video player but it does allow you to see what is possible at the moment.

It's still a tad unrealistic due to the state of GPRS. You want a $300 phone bill every month for watching some sorry-assed CNN news clips or watching a homeless guy push a shopping cart around Times Square?
It's fun with Bluetooth - there you can keep tabs on the denizens of NYC while sitting on the can in Prague. Surreal experience.
Tip for what it's worth: I rip audio streams from the Web with JetAudio, which has an easy-to-record-from-your-system-mixer feature straight to ogg. You just start a stream on your desktop (any player - it's just taking the sound from the sound card), start the recorder (even has a timer to cut it off when you want) and transfer the file when done for playing in OggPlayer. A 1-hour stream usually comes out around 13mb at 40-odd kbps. There's a program by Camtasia that does similar for video, but it's pricey and kind of hard to use.

Hi,
thanks for the earthcam links - but they are really old... No TV / Radio broadcast?
Coming to GPRS - well, you can have volume tariffs here in Germany. Vfe offers you 20MB for like 29 EUROs which is pretty much ok. See, when u listen to news, you would have 2-3 mins broadcast plus some overhead time before and afterwards which is like 5-7 mins. 40kbps GPRS = 8kB x 60 secs x 7 mins = 3MB roughly. Which gives me around 6x free news a month, plus some other traffic (now they're even planning to go up to 30 or 50MB a month).
Ad second, there is CSD traffic. 7 mins = 7x 0,29 EURO which is 2,10 EURO - and sufficiently enough.
It does not have to be permanent stream, just selected for special events.
