I have now joined the 128Mb club

Before I even start putting huge files on my new found memory I know that transferring them onto the card through the cradle will take me a very long time.

I'm looking for recommendations on which memory card reader/writer to get to help me. Come on people, I know you can help.

I have a Dane-Elec 5 in 1 reader. I bought one cos I work in McDs and somebody left a digital camera there. We kept it for lost property for ages, and the pictures on it looked like there were tourists and would never probably come back, so I kept it and bought the 5 in 1 to read the SD card. I think it cost about £30-£40 from Expansys, but this was a while ago, I think they are cheaper now and come in 6 or 7 in 1 readers now.

The speed of transfer is very quick compared to the cradle! I only use the cradle for backup for the phone memory only!

Lacie usb 2.0 5 in 1 is great. Small form, aluminum box, cheap (30 euros or so).

USB 2.0 or firewire is the way to go. Upload times won't change much from the standard dock on USB 1. Invest in a 2.0 card (another 30 or so) - 10 songs=50 secs or so, faster if you get a firewire reader (which are pricier).

If you're UK-based then this one from eBuyer is a bargain! :

I have one and it works great. You can even plug the MSD stright into the slot, unlick some reader/writers, which require you to put the MSD into the MS jacket.

Thanks demon106

That looks like it could do the trick. From the picture it looks as if it plugs directly into the usb port without any cable, is this true? My pc main unit is under my desk and hidden away therefor I would need one with a cable. I wouldn't have thought a usb extension cable would be that much tho.

What are the transfer rates like for you?

It can plug directly into the USB port, but also comes with a 1m USB cable with it. Transfer speeds are good (5 meg MP3 in about 10 secs) and the device integrates with Windows Explorer, so is visible as another drive so you can copy stuff straight to it.

Do what "braingel" says, get a USB 2.0 device. Once I've used a USB2.0 card reader, I could never go back to the 1.0 or 1.1 version. All the flash cards I tested transfers 3 to 5 times faster than my old card reader.
