> GPS on Orange

Ive been observing recently that my phone displays the area in which i roam, i mean wherever i am in my city, it shows the rd name, etc ..
Is that new or does it already exists with everyone else in the world ? And also is this GPS ? I think its also used for advertising, cuz every time i pass a Mc Donalds, or a Pantaloons shop, or anyother big store, i receive an sms from that shop .

Firstly, the name on the screen is nothing new - Voda UK (business at least) have done this for years now. It's not actually displaying the name of your location, but the location of the base station you are connected to (hence will be approximately where you are, give or take a couple of miles.)
Sending SMS to you from shops means that they have a local short-range 'base station' of their own. As you walk past, your phone handshakes and assesses whether or not this station is better to connect to that the one you are currently on (i.e. is nearer, has better signal from using it, would drain less power - your phone won't immediately know that the station it's trying to connect to is actually a 'McDonalds' transmitter with a range of only 10-20m or so, rather than the Orange station of 2+miles!) Obviously, when the McD's station replies to your phone with a 'deny' for connection, the phone doesn't bother trying to move stations, and stays on the current one - however, in the time your phone was attempting to connect to the McD's, that local station swiped all your details and sent a message directly to your phone, using that information.

The shoip thing is sed with the 'push inbox' IIRC. I have never seen it used before though.
What you are experiencing is the Area info reception reading. Not all providers support it and it is easy to switch off, just go into your messages folder and de-activate it.

you might be right but ... the lane in which i live is known as CITY LIGHT, and when i go to the next lane or maybe a few 200-300 meters away , it changes to whatever the name is !!! how can orange have transmitters in every lane/area , i dont think thats possible or would it be possible ?

You must have 'Area Info' turned on. What you are seeing is the 'name' of the cell, the name which the cell is transmitting as its own. Each block will have a cell covering it or, there will be no connectivity in that block.

Orange may well have pico cells in lots of different streets. In heavy urban areas the density of buildings mean that one big transmitter won't do as there will be plenty of places where the signal won't get to and so they fill in the gaps with short range pico cells. These can often be seen on the sides of buildings and are very small. So it is quite possible that there are some of these on each street and your phone is switching between them.

Orange doesn't actually support cell info or area code info (Orange UK, anyway)

i remember turning area info on , maybe its area info after all.
although orange has the best coverage in bombay, i dont think they'd put in money for pico cells, as this country aint so ahead in communication technology. also i havent seen any of those pico cells.
