I noticed that a lot of people get misled by their operators regarding GPRS charges... (big surprise) ... for example, a telco will list a game as 50KB and give a per KB rate... one thing they do NOT tell you is that when you download, or surf in general, you don't just use up 50KB. Even SMS over GPRS is misleading.
Ok, this may or may not be a big deal, but to those who are trying to save a few bucks (regardless of your country or currency)... just take this into consideration...
When using GPRS, it works the same way as the internet... there is a packet sent to request connection to the service (unless you leave your connection on 24/7) ... then your service sends a packet back giving your phone an IP address.. then your phone acknowledges receiving the packet... then transmission of data starts..
BOTH WAYS... remember that your phone will behave like a PC already... and has to verify packets received... so unless your telco only charges for DOWNLOADED data, a 50KB download will probably hit around 53KB or so.
Like I said, it's not that much overhead... but I just wanted to inform you guys of this 'slight' discrepancy..just in case. Of course checking your
Total Data will give you a pretty accurate reading too, but I just noticed that a lot of people don't consider the upload data or packet receipt data that your phone sends out as well.
There...

I hope this isn't COMPLETELY useless info.

Protocol overhead is something you can't get away with, it's a fact.
Telcos do not mislead you. When they say a game is 30K, it's 30K. Protocol overhead is something you cannot pre-compute, hence it is not listed because they can't.
