Boring subject but need advice.

I have sys R1D, BT R2C. I went to a SE service place and said 'Upgrade it.' The guy said 'Does it work the way you want it to?' After consideration - I finally got BT working, no probs with crashes + GPRS connections and the rest of it - I said yes. He told me to forget the upgrade; the risks of something going haywire outdo the potential benefits (of which I am still not clear.. better picture viewer plus some other improvements?) Plus he needed like 2 weeks to do it. (He was playing solitaire when I came in.)

Any advice? I don't really care about small niggly things, but if there is a serious improvement in speed, enhanced apps, etc. I'm willing to take the risk.

Thanks in advance.

Take the risk. Just make a backup before you turn it in. When I came to the SE serive center they just told me that because I got R1D, SE wants them to make the upgrade to R2F.
The Solitaire dude don't know sh**.

Also don't let them charge you for it.

I've heard people saying they had to pay for it.... if your phone is under warranty (less than 12 months old which all P800's should be) then it is free to update the firmware.

Your first and only mistake. Why'd you say yes?!??? There's no point whatsoever, nor are SE or the service centre obliged to upgrade the firmware on your phone if it already works exactly the way you want it to (actually if it works exactly the way it is meant to, what you want is irrelevant really - but we'll ignore that for now!) Whenever you take a phone into a service centre for a firmware update, there is a problem with it. If there isn't, and you are just wanting a firmware update to get new features that weren't originally advertised as being part of the phone, you make a fault up.

While some service centre's couldn't give a rats arse why you want it done, some will need you to say 'It crashes occasionally', or 'I get a kernel Exec error when running Opera sometimes', or 'my applications disappear when i try to run something' etc etc, and the classic closing line: "Don't you think a firmware update might fix my problem...?"

The service engineer then has a customer with a fault with his phone that is under warranty. He can thus claim back the cost of his work from SE, and everyone is happy. It's not deceitful, it's the way it works. Everyone saying that you are entitled to a free firmware update under warranty is, unfortunately, wrong. You are only entitled to a free one if it is done to 'fix an error', if you are trying to get one to add new features, SE are quite entitled to charge you anything they want for it - so you play the 'fault game'

My local service centre has always done my firmware upgrades for free and in a couple of hours, and now that I think of it, the invoice has always said "SW Problem". The truth is that this is enough for SE to pay for the upgrade. Definitely find yourself another service centre.

And does everyone agree that the day solitaire was in included in Windows (3.1 i think) the world's productivity droppped significantly?

Excellent advice simion_levi, thanks for that. I'm off to CPW to get this baby upgraded.

SE's policy is that regardless of why they went in, all phones should leave the SC with the latest version of fw....

My phone usually takes 90 minutes to upgrade the software at my local SE Service Point. The guy there knows (asks) that nothing is wrong and that I am just getting it upgrade for the hell of it and for the software enhancements and new features. This is a service they provide to customers with warranty. I even didn't have my warranty card once but got the exact same service because they had my serial number and warranty number registered on their system.
