I am a T-Mobile USA customer, and I am wondering if I purchase an unlocked phone that offers the 850 MHz band which Cingular and AT&T have implemented in some rural areas, do you think I would be able to roam in these areas on a T-Mobile SIM?
Case in point: My mom has a now antiquated Nokia 3390 with T-Mobile. She spends the summer in the middle of nowhere in Tennesee at a summer camp. Now this morning she was able to get a small signal from AT&T at 1900 MHz, and I'm wondering if she had a phone with 850 MHz, could she get a better one signal?

i dont think so. the frequency must match the phones frequency. plus u cant roam on at&t with t-mobile, only cingular

And also my mom used her phone today on AT&T. My question is, were I to get an unlocked phone such as a Nokia 3595, could she roam on the 850 MHz part of AT&T or Cingular's network and get a better signal from the 850 MHz band?

hey broken! u know my story about roaming on at&t with a tmo acct. im doing that everyday, albeit i think im sharing one tower that is shared by both att and t mobile. now as for using a 850 mhz....in theory, if they allow crossnetworking at 1900mhz, u would think that the same would hold true for 850mhz. we need input from one who has a 850mhz capable phone. i do like the thinking though, trying to make use of more towers are ya?

I wish that T-Mobile would allow roaming to att in home area too. I get a much stronger signal from att in many places. Phone @ 1900

Well, I can get a new unlocked Nokia 3595 for a fairly low price on eBay, so maybe I will be the first to try it.
If someone else has tried it though, I'd be interested to hear the results they have.

yeah, it won't let me in any area where there is a T-Mobile signal available. But it has allowed me when there is not T-Mobile signal available.

depends really where u live, sometimes t-mo allows u to use other carriers (roaming)in my case/area, tmo mustve agreed to allow me to use atts tower (or vice versa). u can check to see what else is available to u by using "select network" (MENU-CONNECT-GSM NETWORKS)then click on what u want to use. in most cases, if youre in the home area, all youd get is t mobile.
