Hi there,

I've moved my email account from BTOpenworld to ntlworld (ntl).

Does anyone have any experience of setting up GSM email access on the T68i using ntlworld (and Vodafone)?

Many thanks,

P.S. I have GPRS via Vodafone Vizzavi workinga treat.

Hi TPKing,

Mailhosts are pop.ntlworld.com & smtp.ntlworld.com;

Plus, there's a stack of info here:

http://www.ntlworld.com/help/faultsFaqs/dialup.html

As far a I can tell, I entered everything where it should be (as for my old BT a/c) but no joy:

Connect (8)
Data comm (7)
Data accounts (1)

and select ntl, then Edit (1)
1. Phone number = 448454550520
2. User id = name.name@ntlworld.com
3. Password = xxxxxx
4. Passwd request = Off
5. Data rate = 28.8 kbits/s
6. Dial type = ISDN
7. DNS address = 194.168.4.100

Then:
Messages (2)
E-mail (4)
Options (7)
Set account (1)

Account se to ntl

Then, again under Options (7), Edit account (2)

and ntl:

1. Connect using = ntl
2. Protocol = POP3
3. Inc. server = pop.ntlworld.com
4. Incoming port = 110
5. Mailbox = name.name@ntlworld.com
6. Password = xxxxxx
7. Outgoing server = smtp.ntlworld.com
8. Outgoing port = 25
9. Email address = name.name@ntlworld.com
10. Download = Headers text

and the rest is unimportant...

Where'm I going wrong??

Cheers,

Steven.

If you get 'server not found' then use IP addresses instead of URLs.

ntlworld pop3 server: 062.253.162.052

You will have to use the vodafone smtp server since ntlworld have probably restricted access to the smtp server to only users who have dialed in on one of their dialups.

Hi,

I now have:

and select ntl,
1. Phone number = +448454550520
2. User id = name.name@ntlworld.com
3. Password = xxxxxx
4. Passwd request = Off
5. Data rate = 28.8 kbits/s
6. Dial type = ISDN
7. DNS address = 194.168.4.100

And in Messages (2)
E-mail (4)
Options (7)
Set account (1)

Account set to ntl, and under Options (7), Edit account (2)

and edit ntl

1. Connect using = ntl
2. Protocol = POP3
3. Inc. server = 062.253.162.052
4. Incoming port = 110
5. Mailbox = name.name@ntlworld.com
6. Password = xxxxxx
7. Outgoing server = smtp.ntlworld.com
8. Outgoing port = 25
9. Email address = name.name@ntlworld.com
10. Download = Headers+text

Still no joy. Before it says cannot connect to server, it flashes up 'wrong i.d.' or something - but this can't be so as I'm using email via the PC with no problems. I am registered through broadband; will that affect my trying to access via dial up?

why do you have a ntl data account? can tyou just use a voda one?

anyway, the settings i used to use were:

POP3 server: 62.253.162.50
POP3 port: 110
Mailbox: your email address minus the "@ntlworld.com"
Password: your email password
SMTP server: 62.253.162.40
SMTP port: 25
Email address: your email address

it has been a long time since i used it though, so they might be outdated

Hi MixiN,

Not sure really.

I used to have a BTOpenworld account, and I used a BT data connection to access it. So, when I moved to ntl, and I located what I thought were the ntl dial-up connection details, I set about making an ntl data ccount.

I was under the (probably mistaken) impression that to access the accounts, I would need to us ethe relevant dial-up connections... No?

Oh I know what your problem is.

I didn't see that you were trying to dial in using your ntlworld ISP dialup. This isn't a practicle way to send/receive your mail since you will be charged for the length of the phone call.
Instead, use a GSM wap dialup/data GPRS account where most providers have a free wap allowance or only charge you pennies for connecting to wap.

edit: Mixin: there isn't any need to use the vodafone email account. Most people have ISP email accounts rather than relying on their network provder for email.

Hi Phil.n.

I've gone back to using the pop.ntlworld.com/smtp.ntlworld.com rather than IP addresses:

Hi,

I now have:

and select ntl,
1. Phone number = +448454550520
2. User id = name.name@ntlworld.com
3. Password = xxxxxx
4. Passwd request = Off
5. Data rate = 28.8 kbits/s
6. Dial type = ISDN
7. DNS address = 194.168.4.100

1. Connect using = ntl

3. Inc. server = pop.ntlworld.com

5. Mailbox = username
6. Password = xxxxxx
7. Outgoing server = smtp.ntlworld.com
8. Outgoing port = 25
9. Email address = username@ntlworld.com
10. Download = Headers+text

I have tried to connect using my VodafoneGPRS data account, set up through the SE WWW site - and this GPRS data account works for WAP browsing.

When I do this, it just stays on 'Finding Server. When I hit 'No', it says 'Sending message', and returns something like '1324 bytes sent'!

I just don't get it!

Ok, just to confirm.
You downloaded the GPRS configuration and that works for wap browsing but not for you email? If this is correct then that is because you have the wap APN and not the data APN.

You have decided to go back to dialing in using the ntlworld ISP dialup? If so then I still recommend against this. If you cant get GPRS to connect then you can at least connect using a GSM account.

you are using URLs instead of IP addresses? If it works then that is fine - you shouldn't notice any difference. I normally find that people have less trouble using IP addresses.

The "sending email", "xxxx bytes sent" can happen on my phone as well. It isn't anything to worry about.

So where are you now in terms of progress?

Regards,

Phil.
