SOLVE VISOR PROBLEMS CAUSED BY AN UPDATE
Unlike handhelds manufactured by Palm, Handspring Visors have a
hardwired version of the Palm operating system (OS). This means that users are
often barred from updating the OS on their Visor and should take particular
care when installing functional updates such as the Enhanced Infrared
Update. The Enhanced Infrared Update allows Palm OS handhelds to exchange
data via the IR port with a greater variety of peripheral devices, most
notably certain Ericsson cellular phones. However, if you follow Palm's
instructions for installing the Enhanced Infrared Update on your Visor, your
handheld is likely to freeze up or enter a startup loop.

This loop is caused by the installation of incompatible system
extensions from the update. To break out of the loop, perform a system reset by
following these steps:
1. Unscrew the pointed end of your Visor stylus to reveal the Reset Pin,
or unfold a standard paper clip.
2. Hold down the top scroll button on the Visor's front panel.
3. Use the Reset Pin or paper clip to depress the reset button on the
Visor.
4. When the Preferences dialog box appears, release the top scroll
button.
The Visor should now function without any system extensions. Remove the
incompatible extensions installed by the Enhanced Infrared Update to
prevent the loop error from recurring. The Visor only needs the
SerIrCommLib.prc file and not the additional AMX.prc, IrLib.prc, and
SerialIrPanel.prc files, as Palm suggests. To remove the unnecessary
extensions, follow these steps:
1. Tap the Applications button.
2. Tap the Menu button.
3. Select Delete from the App menu.
4. Select the appropriate files from the menu, tap the Delete button,
and tap Yes.
Power down, and then power up the Visor to ensure that the solution is
successful. If you still have a recurring system loop error or have lost
key IR functionality, contact Handspring Customer Support for assistance.
