stating obvious here:
take battery out, put it back in.
if still doesnt work, charge it up.
if still not, take it to a service centre

Mine did the same but I took the battery out over night and then it was fine the next morning except I lost everything on the memory stick as it had to be reformatted before the phone would recognise it.
I am not sure if this was coinicedence but IR tv remote software had reached its expiry date that day, so I am not sure if that had anything to do with it.
But the phone has been fine ever since but I havent reinstalled that piece of software just in case.

My guess is you have the first SW? There was a bug in it... All you need to do is take it to a SP and have a SW upgrade done to it. There is a coupple of topics on the subject here at Esato. One of them is mine because I had the same problem a few months back. You will have lost everything you had stored but if a sync has been done you have nothing to worry about, just do a backup when you have done the SWupgrade and you are back to normal.

Great post - as my phone has just done exactly the same thing!
Can't get it to fire up at all but when you attempt to switch it on it does vibrate but the display does not light up at all. I was using Opera before it died and it was sooooo slow that it locked up and since then it's dead (and no it ain't the battery!).

I had the same problem but since the very annoying people at the Telstra Shop where I bought my P800 played with it for their own enjoyment before selling it to me, I was eager to get a brand new one so I swapped it over under a "Early Life Failure."

S P = Sound Processor (this causes the p800 to permantanley shut down and emit a high pitched Beep even with the battery removed)
S W = Is the name of the sandwich washer in the p800 this spins at around 4,000 rpm a bit of contact or rough handling destroys this part rendering the p800 magnetic field distruptor feature use less.
