It's unlikey that someone would write a phone virus. Virus authors want to cause the maximum carnage, so they go for the most common platform, i.e., PCs. They don't even bother writing them for Macs.

I phone virus would have to spread by sending itself to people in your contacts list, but most of those people wont even by running the same OS as you, so the virus would stop there and wouldn't be very contageous.

I suspeckt that these idiots creating these viruses will make programs constructed "blow up" individual phones.
What will happen is free applications will be put on the net and people will download them on to their phones and "boom".
IF this happens it will be up to us, and other moile sites, to warn others about them.

Yeah IF it happens, then Antivirus companies will also make a upgrades to remove these programs. Now these are viruses I wouldn't be afraid of if there was a protection against it, since you scan it before you put it in the phone. That is IF it existed.

Call me cynical but im fairly certain that at least half the Viri out on the market at the moment are created by the companines that make the anti virus software (think about it... it makes sense!)

So if Norton or McCafy or any of the other companies believe they can make alot of money for developing this then don't be surprised if virus' begin to pop up

It does not sound cynical. I don't think that they create viruses, but who knows.. they might have insider info now and then when there are really big ones. Like paying of someone to fix something nefarious.

Hi,

viruses on mobile phones will be of other nature: hidden traffic on your personal costs!

How much do you know about SMS's being sent out while using an application?

Try an early version of MiniGPS and attach an SMS event to a cell - when you hop in and out of a cell it always triggers an SMS - but you dont know.

I am not saying MiniGPS is a virus application - but what I am saying is that malicious apps can use interfaces which you are not aware of - and they waste your money!

Now imagine premium SMS services - and you pay hidden by sending to a SMS premium service provider - lets assume 1 USD per SMS - do you see the problem?

We will need to have way more "sandbox" functionality in these devices than "just plain simple" virii as being seen so far...

GPRS and

Anti-virus companies don't need to write viruses. There's enough people out there with no friends, poor personal hygine and a pizza fixation doing it for them!

well if anyone has a 3650, you know that wildskinz is basically a virus for that phone! lol!

for those of you who don't know what i'm talking about, its a series 60 app created to change the background of the menu and things like that. basically themes for series 60 phones. what would end up happening is that it would mess up a 3650 where you couldn't enter text, only numbers, even if t9 or multitap was selected, plus it crashed the phone a lot.
