I have got a p800 and was wondering if there is any other program available to backup the contacts.

You can sync with outlook or windows address book. It is kind of the same as backing up. If you lose all the data you just sync but override all the info in the phone.

i have tryed doing that and it sucessfully copys all the contacts to outlook, BUT when i delete a contact out of the phone book then re syncronize it does not copy the contacts back to the phone. i have checked all the syncronize settings and they are all set up properly

What settings do you have checked in the pc sync software?
You can select override all phone contacts
or override all computer contacts
Or merge the contacts between the two?
Have you tried each of these?
