> Why bother using a screen protector?

Lots of people on this forum have referred to various P800 screen protectors (e.g. Brando Workshop and Martin Fields) that they have bought or used.
But is it worth it? Here in the UK our phones are heavily subsidised - I got my P800 as soon as they were released on Orange and paid nothing. I fully expect to get a brand new one in 10-12 months from then, or a better model - maybe the P810 if it's out...
So why bother to protect the screen? I can probably go for 12 months without scratching it up to badly. Actually I'm more likely to drop it in the toilet (my 6310i and you don't want to know what happened next) or leave it on the roof of my car then reverse over it when it falls off (my 2110 - those were the days - and it survived too!).
Careless history aside though, what's the obsession with screen protectors?
Note: I appreciate that the UK model for cellphones (get your phone cheap or free and lock into a 12-month contract) is not the same everywhere and certainly if you have to pay a lot for a P800 I can understand why you'd want to protect the screen.
What do you think?

well not everyone is lucky to get a P800 for a low subsidised price. a lot of us bought the P for around 1000 usd so i guess u get the answer.
and even if spends as low as 400 usd, i am sure one would buy the screen protector
if u dont mind, can i pay u for a P at a sub price and ship it to me?

It doesnt matter how much I paid for my P800, even if someone gave it to me for free, I would still want the screen to be 100% scratch free because scratches on the screen annoy me. I always keep my electronics very clean and in good condition, they last longer that way, and you'll get more money back if you ever want to sell it because people will always buy a P800 in perfect condition over a P800 with scratches on the screen.

yes everybody out there protect ur screen now! i didnt care to, n now have a grid pattern of scratches from playing Gridlock! very very annoying to look at :( my stylus had sharp edges so had to sand them off a bit, works better now. But the damage had already been done! aaarrrghhh!!

I find that the Brando actually adds something with that scratchy paper kind of thing too - makes writing a lot easier. Negative is that it dulls things a tad, but not to a bothersome level.
Even if you paid nothing (? - find that hard to believe) the thing will have some resale value and scratched screen on a gadget like this will markedly lower the value.

It's a weird thing about the way the mobile phone industry works. I have to keep reminding myself that these are expensive pieces of technology, because at the end of the 12-month contract, they just get consigned to the bottom drawer with all the old Nokias - like lots of UK posters to this forum I have plenty of them and they simply aren't worth anything in the UK.
That's a real advantage the P800 has over PDAs with phone functionality - you pay lots (i.e. a normal price) for the PDA, but for the P800 you get it subsidised by the network and pay nothing.

In principle I don't have a problem getting you a phone. (I'll be in DC October.) Of course in getting a "free" handset from me, you'll be locking me into a 12-month contract so you'd have to pay me the 12 monthly fixed charges. The total will probably be about US$400.
Not such a good deal for you now, I guess, because you won't get to take advantage of all the bundled airtime minutes the monthly subscriptions entitle you to.

If you use the flip (which I don't) you'll need a screen protector as the button pins from the flip will eventually damage your screen.

I use my brando so it's easier to use fingers/thumbs on the screen. I rarely have to wipe fingerprints off, and without it I find myself wiping it all the time.
The protection issue is an added bonus.

Where I live (Frogdom) they start in with the free deals about 6 months after a release - the t68i has been free with a contract for about 4 months now... Never seen the p800 under 600 euros even with a contract.
But then, I'm in Frogdom.
