> gprs on t610 and orange

just got my sexy new t610 on orange. Free from mobileshop.com on the 200 minute plan. Cant argue with that!
First thing I wanted to try out apart from musicdj and the camera was gprs.
However the little signal quality icon at the top indicated that gprs was available but not enabled!
I phoned up orange techsupport. They knew nothing about the phone since it was so new to them. They sent me an sms with new gprs settings. I tried this and now the icon doesnt even show that gprs is available! I am in the same place as before.. ie. my office!
Is this a phone setting or an orange thing.
I am desperate to start downloading new themes, rings etc. I assume that using wap is painfully slow.

your sim does not have the gprs product on it, or there is a transmitter fault near u - GPRS is the first thing to go if that is the case

if its a phone thing go to the connectivity icon and enterthe menu its in the bottom left corner from there go to data comm. this is at the bottom of the list then goto prefered services it should be set to gprs and gsm
by default its set to gsm only when you get the phone if this doesnt work then you will need to contact orange as it may not have been activiated

I phoned them and it says that is has been activated. Maybe I am not in a GPRS area but I am in the centre of london surrounded by dozens of phone transmitters and in line of site of the BT tower...
there appear to be a number of different profiles, GPRS WAP and GPRS internet among them.. which should I use?

connectivity-data comm-prefered servcies- gprs/gsm
if it is then try to log onto the wap using it.
to do this go into connectivity and check the menu called wap profiles
make sure that gprs is seleted here.if its a contract phone or you have the access pack ignore the payg settings and chose the one called orange gprs

If u hav'nt done this yet try taking the battery off while the phone is switched ON! This should fix it if your settings are correct,if not i'd ring Orange again.

Actually whether gprs/gsm is set in the preferred service menu doesn't make any real difference apart from whether the gprs signal indicator is shown or not when a gprs connection isn't active. If preferred service is set to GSM only then the blue triangle will not appear when in standby but when you initiate a GPRS connection it will then appear and still connect fine (assuming the rest of the settings are correct).
@Angelman - is it only the GPRS signal indicator that is a problem? Have you actually tried starting a GPRS session? Just try opening the Orange WAP page (by default the button on the right of the phone should do this). Does it connect? If not what error message do you see?

I have the same problem as well. I have t-mobile service in the US, I can use wap without a problem however I don't have the gprs indicator. I cannot figure out why. I called t-mobile they couldn't help me then I called ericsson they couldn't help me either, they both throw the case to each other. I can use gprs without a problem but my phone does not show if it's getting the signal. Any ideas? Thanks

If it does then it is just the slight change in settings that has already been mentioned in the thread - just go to Connectivity menu - Data comm. - Preferred service and switch it to GPRS and GSM. As you have discovered, having it set to GSM only doesn't actually prevent you from starting a GPRS session - it just doesn't display the blue triangle when a GPRS session isn't active.
If your problem isn't the above then I'm not sure what is going on! Presumably you get the little globe icon for when a GPRS session is active?
