my tip would be to shoot all the aliens!
but seriously, take your time and make every shot hit something so that you get 100% for every set. That is worth 1000 points. If you miss only one shot then you only get the number of points represented by 500 times the % you actually hit. So missing just that first one shot costs you 500 points!
Also, make sure you shoot the mother ship as that gives you more shields (for when you press up arrow to protect against falling bombs and missiles) and also gives you more rockets that can shot the mother ship in one go.
My best score is 22500 but the best on SE fun is now 30600 last time I checked. I haven't worked out the max possible score but that must be pretty close to it!

Try to finish off the aliens on one side (either the right side or the left side) so it would take the aliens longer to travel down.

go to the far sides and keep holding to the side it dodges all the fire from the aliens just make sure u shoot the missiles that run down the side
take out the alien ship at the begining of the level a missle should do it if your aim is good
ive done it a few times and u get four powerups out of it
get the power ups by shooting the ufo! the F's are the best

No, I didn't hear back from the developer at all.
The only work around is to play with sound off. I am hoping to get R1L firmware this weekend so I will check it to see if that fixes the problem.

ok I can confirm with R1L firmware you can now play AlienScum with sound on and it no longer crashes on the first set when you core 100%
