I've tried and tried... searched and searched the forum. But there is no way of changing the voice mail alert tone, is there???

I've gone into Messaging accts - Alerts - and there just does not seem to be this option anywhere on the phone.

If your using a T68 like your picture suggests you cannot change the tone. If you have a P800 what software version do you have?

Oh, s**t, I didnt realise that my pic shows a t68. (Note to self - change picture of phone)

Right, I am actually using a p800, and Im on the R2F software.

I have seriously looked everywhere on the phone, consulted the manual, consulted this forum - all to no luck.

Now I know SE have made some MAJOR cock ups on this phone, but surely they havent forgotten to put in an option that allows you to change the voice mail alert tone, have they!

@Scouser, the Voice mail alert tone is the same as the Txt Message alrt tone. So whatever u set the SMS alrt, it will be the same for the Voice Mail message, i know it sucks, but thats what its like on other phoens too.

For the others who didnt understand what scouser was talking about, here in UK on the GSM1800/DCS1800 frequencies (T-Mobile, Orange, Virgin) whenever we have a new voice mail, we dont get a "text message"/callback like those on "normal" GSM phones. Instead we get a special alert saying "new network voicemail" and instead of a normal text message or MMS icon, we get a special icon of an "envelope with a small tape recorder" (DOnt bother loking at the P800 manual, its not there). This icon will remain on the screen until you actually check your voicemail, and listen to the waiting message. This was a feature of the old DCS system before it was officially incorporated into the GSM standard. "Normal" GSM900 as far as i know doesnt support this, though i speak only of UK and Australian experience on this.

Scouser was asking if we could choose a different alert tone for that. Unfortunatly the answer is no, and is actually in line with most phones, except maybe Seimens (who are more experienced with the old DCS services)

Janahan,

Thanks for the reply. But, I've changed my SMS alert tone, and the tone I get for voice mails is still the standard default tone - not the same as my SMS alert tone.

I dont mind not having seperate alert tones to SMS's, but the default tone is inaudible if phone is in bag, pocket etc and therefore I need an audible tone for voicemails alerts.

So using SMSTones++ wouldn't work for you? I put my the number I receive my "You have 1 new Voice Mail message" SMSs from into my P800 as a mobile number and assigned a custom tone to it. Works well.

@scouser_75, Good news for you, i am a UK user & back in January i realised the answerphone alert was not included in the options for using an alert of your choice, so i used "File manager" (You need this app & have to be familiar with using it) to find & change the alert to my own chosen WAV sound. here is the way i did it;
The default sound is in the file system on the p800 in,
C:\*system\data\defaultsounds, its called "Notification.mid" so get your new sound/WAV file, change its name to Notification.mid & move it to C:\*system\data\defaultsounds, after changing the original Notification.mid file to another name OR deleting it.

I did find trouble changing the old alert name though, but it was because i had'nt shut all unused apps down, also i had to go to edit, then attributes & uncheck the three little box's because it.s a read only file.
The messing around involved means you dont want to do it too often, any probs feel free to PM me, but if you dont use "File manager" allready, maybe its not a good idea as you can easily screw up your phone.

@Scouser Unfortunately my phone has been in Carphone warehouse since last saturday having its firmware upgrade done (massive backlog, thanx to T-Mobiles recent network problems, and then blaming it on phone software)

I had an earlier firmware, (i think R1B or somthing, the one without delivery reports etc.) Althoguh i definately wasnt able to specify a different ringtone for the Voicemail alerts, i remember that it did use the same one as used in SMS (i had a star trek wav file saying "Captain........ incoming message") I should be getting the phone back today, and i will check and make sure. I will have the latest firmware now though (R1F).

I will test it out and get back to u.

@Bogus Jimmy
thats a great tip and may be usefull to others, but doesnt help scouser. If you read my earlier post u will realise why.

Thanks Janahan.

I think it's real strange, cuz I too was on the old firmware until recently. I've since changed upto R2F. But, Ive changed my sms alert tone to the Nokia SMS alert (downloaded from another site). But when I get a voice mail I still get the default alert tone.

And talking about R2F - Am I the only 1 who thinks its way to over-rated? Ok, you do get delivery rprts, which is great. And you do get wide screen pics and video.

But these are about the only major changes.

You sacrifice battery time. In flip on mode, when you get an SMS and press OK to read it the back light doesnt automatically come on (it did in the old firmware).

SE I feel are way too slack and careless in my opinion.

In fact, I mite just have to start a thread for everyones opinions.
