> GPRS in Australia / New Zealand ??
Bookmark topic
Hi folks..
I know this is strictly off topic, but I know there are good folks here who can help and will read this.
I will soon be jetting off to the other side of the world with my p800 for a while to do some travelling and wonderred how much coverage id get in Oz & NZ for GPRS.
Do the major cities have it & stuff ?
As regards roaming, if one was to travel along the south coast of oz, whats the signal like? Im sort of asking to find out what proportion of the journey I'll have signal and/or internet access for.
Cheers !

yeah Mixin is right these days... the coverage is pretty good.
Can't tell you much about roaming because being an aussie I have a Telstra sim card (as well as UK voda and german O2).
On the odd occassion I have turned a phone on with UK vodafone sim in I have always seen GPRS reception indicated.

Everywhere you get signal, you'll get gprs. However whilst the majority of the population centres are covered there is a lot of bush in between that isn't. Don't know about sth aus, sorry.

NZ's all good too. Vodafone has pretty decent coverage here. I just spent 4 hours on road on Monday - at no time was there a lack of coverage when I wanted it.

Andy_P, would love to buy you some of our amber nectar but unfortunately I am currently doing work at the Deutsche Boerse (German/Swiss futures exchange) for a while as its pretty good euros they pay here in Frankfurt!

I'm not sure how it works, but I can tell you that Telstra has the best coverage for GPRS/GSM outside of cities in Australia. If you can, see if you can roam using Tesltra if you need to "go bush".

Otherwise you'll be fine. You know we're not that behind here in Australia.

i actually found that the GPRS coverage was better in aus than here in the UK
i think i was on telstra most of the time though... sometimes optus as well, but never had any complaints.... you can just set telstra to your prefered network if need be....
another thing i loved about being in aus.. is the way it said the place name.. O2 is just shite and doesnt have that
cruisin down the good ol bruce highway with it on my screen was amazing

damn im looking forward to this trip... never been over that side of the world before!
Best thing is, I have a dodgy corporate account which gives me free unlimited gprs even when roaming for £30 a month... so im going to cut the voice tariff down to a minimum whilst im travelling and just pay the £30 for mobile internet.
Gonna take a lappy & 12v charger and have a VW mobile internet café!!

bring it on.....
