Folks,
I bought a T610 SIM-free about a week ago, and it seems like a pretty good phone - and certainly cool to be seen carrying.
However, I'm a die hard whinger and tinkerer, and I've noticed several problems, or things that should have been done better, or things I'd like to see in future firmware/phones - Maybe it could be a *great* phone.
This is a thread to pull some of these things (and some of yours) together - maybe even Sony Ericsson can read these and fix them in future firmware or consider for future phones. These are meant to be practical problems/suggestions - not 'T610 sucks', or 'Buy Motorola' type flames, or even 'it should have GPS/TV/cofeemaker' type suggestions - just practical improvements/sensible gripes. Also I know some of these have already been discussed - and these are all whinges at the moment - I've started noticing some neat little tricks in the UI too -though the whole idea of a good UI is you don't notice it.
Anyway, here goes:
1 Easily marked plastic case - this looks cool to begin with, but soon get fed up wiping the fingerprints (and earprints !) off.
2 Not transflective display - difficult to read outside, impossible in sunlight
3 The screen backlight 'pulses' when charging, or running java etc - This is not 'flicker' as in screen refresh rate, or game redraw rate, the backlight seems to 'pulse' at 1-3 Hz.
4 Volume buttons bring up useless phone status dialog, rather than volume control - and also is used as a menu control even in 'play sounds' menu, where you'd really want it to do a 'ring tone' volume control
5 signal strength and battery meter are too small, especially when signal strength is low
6 Theres an annoying initial, electronic ring before the polyphonic ring starts
7 The vibrator starts before the ring - this should be an option
8 Can't turn off increasing ring, all rings start quite and get louder.
9 The message alert cant be customized - existing ones are rubbish, cant seem to add new ones
10 The 'end call' soft key is the left key for incoming, the right key for outgoing?? or something is funny about it anyway - maybe i'm just getting confused - cant seem to reproduce this now.
11 The call list is confusing, including incoming, outgoing, and missed calls - the indicators should be clearer
12 Why cant you search the call list (the one you get by moving joystick down from main screen)
13 When phone is suspended, the first key press just unsuspends the phone, and is ignored - ie you cant just start dialing if the phone is off - this should be an option.
14 you can select from the 1st 10 menu items using number pad - the menu items should be numbered to make this easier (or at least menu item numbering should be an option)
15 incoming calls that have no ID are not listed in call list - they should be listed as 'unknown', so you at least have a record that there was a missed call, and the time
16 From the contacts list (down joystick from main), cant add pictures etc - have to go into manage contacts in the launcher. From manage contacts, cant just get a long list, must search first.
17 what order are calls in the call list in ?? Seems to be alternating incoming/outgoing? They are not strictly in time order in anycase.
18 In the browser, there is no indication when you have 'clicked' on a link - only when you use joystick to move to another link does the 'hourglass' appear.
19 The 'more' menu should be customizable like the shortcuts. Or shortcuts should be available from main menu with single button.
20 Entire menu structure should be configurable in themes, with special key sequence as master reset to protect against dodgy themes that leave you with no menu. Same with the desktop/icons etc. Ideally of course all phone functions are provided by an API called from java modules which constitute the UI.
21 More info could be on main screen - it should be configurable
22 Why can't you use a recorded sound as ringtone ?
23 A speakerphone would be a really useful feature (I'd guess the technical limitation is same as #22 above)
please add your own to the list (number them), or comments on these

12: actually this is possible... just press the key corresponding to the start letter and it scrolls down to it.
13: is a good suggestion.
16: I think this is also possible. Scroll to the name you want, then click 'more' and select 'manage contact' from there.
The others are all good suggestions, too. Let's also add sockets support from Java :o)

all good suggestion which would make this very good phone a great phone. but what i don't understand is that most of things suggested in the list are just common sense... so doesn't sonyericsson have a research/troubleshooting/testing team of some sort which looks into such stuff and make sure that the end user is satisfied to the utmost possible?

"8 Can't turn off increasing ring, all rings start quite and get louder."
Are you serious!? Being able to select constant loud ring level when the phone starts ringing is standard amongst most mobiles.

Didn't realise you cant use GPRS from java - if this is the case this is a MAJOR limitation, and in fact one of the reasons for me buying the phone is to start developing some java networks apps.
For #12 - when i say search, I mean multi-character search - ie there is a search dialog when you want to select a contact from within, say, manage contacts - but you can't do this from the contact list you get from the main screen - it should be an option in the 'more' menu, or something.
For #16, I don't have a 'manage contact' item in my 'more' menu (I have sim-free T610 - not sure which firmware level)

I think I must be the only person that likes the way SE have done the ringtones on this model.
What everyone refers to as the increasing ring-tone is not strictly that feature. When increasing ring is on, the phone starts to ring quietly and then bumps up its volume every few seconds until it reaches the phones maximum capabilities. However when it is off, the ringtone will again start quiet but quickly increase up to your predefined volume level (not the phone's maximum).
Like I said, I like this system (especially with musical ringtones) because it's nicer to have your tune fade in than to just have it blare out at high volume straight away. It's just personal preference I suppose, but I hope they don't change it in future firmware releases.

Ah, that makes things clearer. To me that would be preferred and acceptable, although it would be nice if you were given the option of:
a) gradual increasing ring untill max
b) ringtone starting quiet but quickly increases to your predefined volume level
c) immediate loud ring untill phone is answered (as with most 'older' phones.

These are my gripes and wishlist for the T610. I think most of them should be able to be done via software upgrade.
N1. SMS takes WAYYY too many steps/button presses...e.g. start with joystick-left: write new (after finished writing sms) -> continue (1) -> Look up (2) -> Select Phonebook (3) -> Find (4) -> select contact (5) -> select home or hp (6) -> send or add recipient (7) -> send (8). Eight steps/button presses just to send an sms, that's just too much. Please improve this.
N2. When you plug in the handsfree, the phone itself doesn't ring, only via the earphone. I usually dont put the earphone in my ear all the time since I use the clip. I missed a few calls because of this. The phone should ring even when the handfree is plugged in.
N3. The increasing rintone has to go, or at least give us the option to turn it off. With the inital ring plus the increasing ringtone, by the time the ringtone reaches full blast, I'd answer the call already. So I don't get to hear my wonderful ringtones all that much. In noisy areas, I'd missed my calls altogether because the phone has gone into voicemail before I can answer.
N4. Please come up with alternative housing that are fingerprints-free. I'd buy them for sure. Its really annoying having to wipe the phone all the time.
N5. The "More" button should include your Shortcuts, and allow us to configure the order of the list too.
N6. Same as Jackpipe: what order are calls in the call list in ?? Seems to be alternating incoming/outgoing? They are not strictly in time order in anycase. *They should in be in the order that calls came in.*
N7. You can't delete a particular number from the call list. We should have the option for this.
Jackpipe...how are you going to send this to SE?
