Don't know if this is common knowledge, but soon you will be able to send text messages from your ordinary phone very soon, no idea of prices , I just work for the phone company and I've just put the data in for it.

it's already possible to do it... a few of Siemens DECT phones has support for SMS, and there is a SMS terminal called iType... one phone operator here in Sweden supports SMS over PTN (Public Telephone Network)

There's a couple of home phones that support this. At home we have a Phillips one which supports SMS

When you send an sms to a landline in Holland, a computer at the network-provider (KPN) will call the receiver and read the text message to him/her, so it should work with every phone then...
