I've been using phones for quite awhile now, and I remember the days when Nokia's were everywhere hands down with a bit of Motorola here and there.
Lately it seems that Nokia has been losing market share, while other manufacturers are coming out with newer, flashier, and better phones. Samsung is one that stands out to me with 40 tone polyphonic ring tones and 65000 color screens.
While other manufacturers are improving their phones with each new release, it seems that Nokia has stuck with the same 4 tone polyphonic, 4096 color standard it's been using for previous models. It's like they just have a bin of parts they use to make a new phone... "I'll take one of those radios, a 4096 color screen, throw in some software used in the 6610 and 7210, and design a new case for it." *Poof!* A new phone release.
I know other manfactuers like Sony Ericsson release different phone models for the same phones (T610/T616, T310/T316, T300/T306, etc.) but it's the same phone with different frequency bands depending on region. Nokia repackages parts and releases it as a completely new phone.
I'm not a huge supporter of any one manufacturer but I've just noticed this trend. Perhaps its more widespread than just Nokia, but that stands out in my mind.
If Nokia continues this trend, I think that other companies like Samsung and Sony Ericsson are going to have a good shot at taking over the top spot. Any thoughts?

now, for my 2 cents.
i am, and will be a SE fan for a very long time. however, i believe nokia will still be #1. why because: "familiarity breeds comfort". the nokia name is associated with celphone. people who are not tech savvy, or realize what a celphone can do, will easily gravitate to the brand they know best ie. sony. the product is not necessarily the best but is the most popular-so "I'll go for what the guy next to me gets"
unfortunately the masses know nokia-so they own a large portion of the consumers-thus stay in #1 (in terms of revenue)

There are too many idiots out there who think that Nokia phones are so high-tech. Personally I buy the phone that is right for me. Most phones are a pretty big investment (around US$400-500). how can you not research them and find out what is the best on the market?

When talking about GSM hand sets there has been 4 big players on the stage, ie. Nokia, Motorola, (Sony) Ericsson and Siemens. This is very much beacause the asian manufacturers didn't got in to this business until pretty lately. I guess it's because they have been into Japanese standards and others..?
Hopefully the asian players will continue the the development they have shown now, like Panasonic with the GD87 and upcoming X70, NEC with their WCDMA handsets and so on. This will for sure turn the sales figures to others than today, and hopefully Nokia will wake up and devlelop brand new terminals rather then revised design. Right now it looks like they are only into this to earn the most possible money and not to step up technical- and design development.
