OK well I struggled manfully with the above for about ten days burning up much internet time (esp. here) and eventually got it working.

It was great - used it frequently for a couple of weeks mainly for sending and receiving emails. Far better and more convenient than lugging a laptop round.

However - without changing a thing (I kid you not) it has suddenly stopped working... which is infinitely annoying.

IPAQ connects with T68i via bluetooth ok; T68i connects with GPRS ok; but then inbox will just sit in a 'connecting...' state until it times out (and similarly pocket explorer will never find its page). When ending the connection the phone says something like 206bytes sent, 310 recvd (or maybe vice versa) indicating that there was a data connection going of some sort.

Separately the T68i will on its own surf the internet via gprs indicating that that end is working.

I would be most greatful for any suggestions pointers as to what to do now. By definition (as it worked for a couple of weeks) all the set up params seem to be correct as per instructions around the place.

Curiously I never used any extra dial-string modem settings when it worked. If I now do and try anything starting AT... I get number not recognised from the ipaq; if I try +cgdcont=1,"IP","INTERNET" I get gprs params not recognised from the phone.

Any help gratefully recv'd...

Mike

ps is the cgdcont anything to do with the CID (my CID=1 is the gprs connection, CID=2 is the MMS)

Am I correct in assuming that you're using the correct APN? APN: internet User and Password: web And that account is CID1? This message was posted from a T610

Tx for asking - in the meantime software rot has truly set in now (without any changes there either) the phone has lost its ability to gprs to the internet (could this be due to trying various extra modem string commands from the pda?? paranoia setting in). I get GPRS parameters not supported whatever I do now.

All the settings are as per the ps. They are not the ones you quote but after a week on the expensive phone-nonhelp from vodafone uk I eventually found someone in a store who found the answer (and he had to make several calls to help/chums etc). It turned out that you need different params for prepay.

As I say I never needed any extra modem commands on the ipaq.

These things are far from being consumer goods - rather regretting I didn't wait until all the "magic" was well and truly hidden from the idiot user

I seem to be having pretty much the same problem. I could connect to Vodafone GPRS and access the internet/e-mail quite happily for a few weeks. Then a few days ago it stopped working, without my changing any settings.

I have a Sony CLIE SJ30 and a T610. I use Vodafone's ConnectMe software to connect. It says it's connected OK, but then times out when I try to connect to a mail server or web site. There is a message in the connection log sometimes saying that it failed to connect to the authentication server (or something like that, the message doesn't always appear in the log).

Maybe it's a Vodafone network problem? I called Vodafone support, but they were predictably unhelpful.

I wonder whether all UK GPRS providers are as bad as each other?

Like you I tried the helpline to no avail (after much waiting).

I went to the main Oxford St (London) branch where I had once been fixed up before. After two hours there (no joke) and leaving my phone over lunchtime they confirmed that my settings were fine and that it was a 'network' problem and that someone form vodafone would call me back within the day. I asked what would happen if they couldn't fix it - the (chief tecchie guy there) said "well thats your last chance" - such an extraordinarily cavalier attitude.

Of course several days later they haven't...

Why is it such a common feature to sell technology before it REALLY works???? Why do we all put up with it????

Anyone know of a reliable UK 2.5G provider?

If I recall...

When just using a phone, for wap surfing, you need the APN 'wap', and for email you need the APN 'internet'.

When using the phone with a PDA, you need the APNs for both to be 'wap'.

AFAIK the wrinkle comes in having a pay-as-you go when you need the APN "pp.vodafone.co.uk".

It this that I suspect isn't completely working...

Curiously I always get an askance look "well most people are on a contract that use gprs" from vodafone bods - kind of like "well what d'ya mean - you expect it to work on pre-pay?".

Am pretty fed up with them tho' - its still not working - what's the point of a gprs phone that can't send/receive email?

You don't just need a contract (on Vodafone for example), but a contract with a certain tariff, in order to get the 'internet' APN.

Well I don't know the ins and outs of all these things (I was trying to remain a consumer rather than a 'prosumer') - however I am assured (ha ha) that my account (or whatever it is) is fully registered.

GPRS access to both wap and email services worked for a couple of weeks and FWIW the salesmen all say it ought to work on pre-pay.

The chief guru guy in the oxford st shop said he'd also had othercustomers with the same problem (which I took to mean server just sitting trying to connect on a pre-pay tariff).

Best thing to do is use the sony ericsson configurator on the website, it sends you two messages and once done mine worked straight away. Better than messing with the settings yourself only to find "Finding Server" displayed forever and a day.
