Commercial software for the P800 requires a registration code that's specific to a phone's IMEI number. The anti-piracy reasons for this are obvious, but it raises the problem of what happens when you replace your phone? This might be with the same model of phone (due to a fault, damage or theft) or with an upgrade (eg, a P810).
Software is frequently node-locked on Unix workstations, but usually companies will let you transfer it to another machine, or you can move the ROM that contains the node ID for a machine. But what's the solution for the P800 (or other smartphone)?
Incidently, does anyone remember the uproar when Intel put individual ID numbers on Pentiums? People felt that this could be misused to monitor what people do on the internet. Now we have smartphones that are starting to encroach in to application areas that were previously the sole domain of computers (like surfing the web) and there seems to be no public concern over invasions of privacy.
Is this something people should be concerned about? Can a website obtain a phone's IMEI number automatically?

i got a replacement handset and just contacted the companies I bought the software from and gave them my new imei number and got replacement registration codes
