Ok, I have no idea of the difference, but from whatI have read, the new

phone is TFT (which stands for...?) and the T610 is STN (again, which stands for...?).

Aside from the bright light visability, what's the difference? Power consumption? Cost?

If I have understod it corectly the difference between STN and TFT is that there is a transistor that shuts every individual pixel on and off. But in STN the transistor only turns the pixel on, and then for "off" it just selfdies. And TFT is more powerconsuming then STN.

A quick Google search has come up with this:

"The basic difference is that the TFT has the circuit transistors placed on the glass at the pixel location. This greatly increases the response time and allows for very fast refresh rates. The Dual Scan STN screens do not have the circuitry on the glass but have to scann the pixel locations. This slows the response time. The response time is important if you wish to have motion video. It allows a greater amount of pages of video (FPS) to be displayed per second. Most STN panels run about 100ms and TFTs run under 30ms response time. The best way to tell if it is STN or TFT is to look at motion video and see if it runs smooth, if it is blurry or jerking around it is most likely STN."

ie it doesn't make any difference to daylight visibility of the screen (though I think TFT can be a little brighter). For that you need a transflective display (where the backlight is actually a frontlight)

yup exactly there is no difference when viewing outdoors. TFT suck battery faster than STN, but TFT is clearer. SE uses some kind of chip to avoid ghosting and to have a fast refresh and thats the beauty of T610. also cheaper.

Also a very big differentiator between an active or passive lcd screen is the viewing angle. Those old enough to remember the early laptop computers know exactly what I am talking about. You had to be exactly in front under the right angle otherwise you couldn't see a thing....
