Bluetooth (

) is short-range (up to 10m) radio frequency communication. Basically, it does what IR does, but without the need for line-of-sight of the two devices.
Like IR, it does not cost, but will decrease standby/talktime of your battery.
It is harmless radiation.
It has 1/4 the transfer speed of IR.
It's great (go see the Tips&Trix thread - I did something naughty today...)

Actually even though theoretic IR speed is 4mb, it's only available through high speed extensions, and you don't get that when using IR serial port to communicate with the phone.
IR Speed: 9.6kb-115.2kb ; 1mb-4mb through high speed extensions.
BlueTooth Speed: 723kb - 1.2mb (using compression)
Also, bluetooth range depends on the device class where:
Class 1. 100m
Class 2. 10m

To send ringtones, pictures, photos (if you have the camera), themes and address book contacts from YOUR phone to ANOTHER phone, or a PDA (handheld PC), or a PC or any other similarly equipped device, you can use: bluetooth (

), IR (infrared), SMS message, MMS (multimedia message) or email. Additionally, you can connect your phone to a PC or PDA etc using a data cable that plugs into the bottom of your phone.
SMS, MMS, email will cost, while cable,

and IR are free.

Connectivity. Instead of cables, or fumbling with IrDA, BT is touted as the next generation alternative to connectivity for devices such as phones, pdas and computers.
For a more technical discussion of BT, try this
sticky post. For a more general discussion, try
this one.
ESATO has lots of discussion about BT, try
