> Use T316 as Infrared Modem
Bookmark topic
Hi,
I've read that the Sony Ericsson T316 can be used as an infrared modem. Does this mean that I can connect it to my laptop through infrared and use my phone as a modem for dialup? I want to do this because then I can logon to my university's network and access files using their dialup access. Can I do this with my laptop and the T316?

You got it right: you can use the phone as an infrared modem (and only that, because the cable modem is not supported for the T3xx series). Just download MPM and the modem scripts from the Sony Ericsson website and off you go. They even have a dial-up connection wizard. ;-) Good luck!

Hi judge, thanks for your reply!
I read somewhere on some newsgroups that with Cingular I have to pay for their wireless internet package in order to use it as a modem, but that seems unfair for me since I won't be using Cingular as the ISP (or accessing the internet for that matter)
Do I have to get this service to use it as a modem, or only if I want to use Cingular as my isp?

I don't know how Cingular works, but here in Romania some operators require you to have a data subscription if you want to use third party ISPs. For that reason I'm using my networks' (connex/vodafone & orange) data services. Nevertheless, try to configure and establish a data connection and see if it works. Another idea would be to contact your operator's customer service dept and ask them if they allow data calls without subscription.
