Having had my t610 for just over a month and never had any problems with it, I was surprised to find this morning that the screen backlight had failed.
The clock in standby mode is just visible, but any amount of keypresses/switching on and off does not fix the problem. Occasionally, the backlight does come on for about a second before going off again. The keypad light also works fine. I also think I can see 'No network' displayed on screen, which is odd as I always had good reception round here, on several networks.
Just wondered if there was a cause/solution to this prob short of sending my phone to SE.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't make myself clear, in saying 'backlight,' I meant that the screen is not illuminated at all: no colour, no nothing, no 64k colour sceen whether the backlight is at full or in standby.

Yeah, like I said, I've tried turning the phone off and on and usually it doesn't help. If I leave it off for a while (over an hour or so) then sometimes the light will work for a short while. But it always seemingly randomly switches itself off again.
I've also tried switching the backlight onto 'always on' but while this may be a solution, I can't use it as battery life is non-existant.
I've also tested the display in the >*<<*<* menu, which was normal, not that I expected any different. :/

you can set it to on auto or off. i cant confirm this for deffo till tonite or tomorrow when i get my t610.

The two options in tht menu are 'auto' and 'on.' But like I said, it's not really an option power consumption wise. It's gotta be a hardware fault I think. It's be helpful to know if anyone else has encountered it. Also, I haven't upgraded the firmware or anything; it's a standard Vodafone UK model.
It's not like I have mis-treated this phone (yet) either, it was my pride and joy 'till it got sick (despite the Vodafone branding).

Actually, on the CD provided with the t610 is also some program that enables you to make settings of the phone (profiles etc...) And there IS option to switch the backlight off
))) Thus the icon of the program is not in the program groups, you have to go to the program folder and there it is - phone settings, via cable it works
) Havenīt tried via BT

these are the only programs that came on my cd
1. "Sony Ericsson Communications Suite".
2. "Sony Ericsson Image Editor"
3. "Sony Ericsson MMS Home Studio"
What program lets you setup the profiles then as i wish to set another website other than vodfone live.
i've already changed the firmware to remove the menu icons but the vodafone homepage is still there and i can't see a way around it.

Somehow, I don't think thats gonna happen. Which is a pain in the backside as I'll have to wait two months before I can go back tot he UK to get it exchanged.
But the really annoying thing is that if it's switched off for over an hour the screen will work for a bit, and when the screen fails it loses signal and reads 'no network' which I find extremely odd.

I'm afraid it's terminal mate, my 610 did the exact same thing. Out of curiousity, what week was yours made in? mine was an 03w23 that died, I've now got an 03w19 and it's fine (bar three pink buttons!)
Mine also read "no network" when the screen died, which leads me to believe it's something major and internal around the antenna connection.
