Q: Can this cable be used with the T610 for general data use (synchronisation, SMS etc), or is it only useful for flashing/unlocking?

Thanks for that.

I think this cable is broken; the SE software will not recognise the phone despite the COM1 port being enabled in the SE control panel applet

Most non-OEM T28 data cables are in fact service cables and incorrectly labeled. If you used that cable to unlock/flash the phone, then you cannot use it for data purpose unless you modify it.
