> Cingular T616 is locked!! Advice please!

Hi,
I just purchased a T616 from Cingular before my trip to Asia and the sales told me that phone is unlocked. Before I signed the contract, I even tried to put my old T-mobile SIM in the new T616 phone to check it out and it worked fine. However, when I tried to put other Asian carrier SIM like 'Orange' to the T616, it was not working at all. One of the local store here suggested me to upgrade the firmware to T610 so that I can use a local SIM card here instead of paying $2 USD per minute for roaming in Asia. Since I know the T616 is a little bit different than the T610 (850 MHz vs 900MHz), would it be possible to install a T610 firmware to the the T616? Thanks for all your advice!

Probably your Orange SIM just can not roam on ATWS/Cingular/T-Mobile network. You can try to see with any other SIM.

Thanks for the info. When I used Cingular SIM card in Asia, I am able to roam in Orange network. However, if I switch to local 'Orange' SIM card, it got nothing at all. I am really interest to use my T616 while I am travelling, do you have any advice for me? Thanks in advance!

Check to see if it really is locked or not... go in your service menu ( > * << * < * ) and check the service info for the lock info. If all the options are unlocked, then try a different sim as was suggested. If any of those are locked, then have a little "conversation" with the salesman.

Thanks for all your help. I finally get that resolved. I checked out that my phone actually is not locked BUT typically is not working good here in the 900/1800MHz here network in Asia. A lot of places are only reached by the 900 MHz, not the 1800 MHz. Thus I did not receive any signal in those places at all. For example, I was purchasing the local 'orange' sim card in the mall and only covered by the 900MHz. I think the rumors is corrected, the T616 is really tuned for the 850/1900 MHz.
Anyway, thanks for all your input again! I will keep on checking how the T616 behaves in the 900/1800 MHz network.
