I subscribe to O2. O2 are due to launch their 3G service early next year. I definately want to go for the SE Z1010 when it is launched, however I'm getting Upgrade-itis and would like to go for the Z600 if released when my 12 month contract is up in September.
My question is: Do you think swapping from 2.5 to 3G in mid-contract will be allowed?
I know O2 are the only ones that can answer my question, but what does everyone think?
Thanks for any imminent replies.
@Racingboy
Thanks for your reply.
Did you know that I would not be able to port my 2.5 mobile number from O2 to "3" until O2's 3G service was up and running? Not that I would want to until "3" sort out their service!

I think they will do it, because a 3g contract will cost more than a 2.5g... And the cost will be going up. Greetzzz

Actually you can port your 2.5G number to 3 now. It doesn't matter whether or not O2 have launched their 3G services - which, by the way, I very much doubt will happen next year.

@racingboy
Actually, 3G contracts are actually *cheaper* than current GSM contracts. Look at 3, £25 for 750mins anytime £99 for 2000mins etc.

I'd upgrade to the P800 now and then get the 3G phone when your contract is up next year. O2 will not let you upgrade mid contract unless; a) you pay a hefty fee and b) you sign up fro a new contract. The cheapest way would be to satisfy your upgraditis now. Then when your phone comes out get a NEW contract and reduce the tariff on your origninal handset to the cheapest they have (£12/month) and put in a draw until 12 months is up. Getting a new contract (especially on the web) is far cheaper than upgrading and the costs should work out to be about the same anyway. (i.e. look into a new contract for a P800 on orange with cyren-communications.com compared to the upgrade fee.)
BT have offloaded MM02 they are now seperate. However BT i thinking of reentering the market in a similar way to Virgin. Providing cheap services for families but renting a network a la virgin/t-mobile. They will be totally seperate from MMO2 (O2)

It's rumoured that 3 will be releasing the Z1010 in Autumn.

bossjohnc, you're spot on!
It was my original intention to port my number over to '3' when the Z1010 was available on their network but I am a little reluctant after all the horror stories I am hearing about the service; getting cut off, etc.
I did call into the '3' store in Oxford Street to enquire as to whether they will be taking on the Z1010; the reply I got was that they would have new handsets around that time of year but they couldn't tell me which ones.
It's a bit worrying to see thay've taken on another NEC handset!
Thanks for the esato link. Veeeery interesting. As you have been a forum member longer than me, can you remember if it was ever mentioned whether the Z1010 would be available in other colours? Not to keen on the 'red' (would still buy it though)!
