do they? I never had a problem connecting my old nokias (8210, 8250) with my pc or pocketpc and similarly I can connect my se phones to same suggesting some sort of common protocol?

Contacts as business cards send fine. As soon as you try to send images, midis, or games it fails. I need to use specific software on my PC in order to achieve this. At least in series 40 nokias it's like this . . . not tried the series 60 ones. This message was posted from a Nokia

Nokia are the service providers' best friend:

Since they block transfer of pictures/tones between phones, people have to send them via MMS @ 40p a shot!

That's just the way it is. I've got a 7210 and cannot send anything to it without using specific software on my pc. There's also no 'send via IR' option on the 7210 so I have to use another program to read stuff off the phone. I am assuming this is the case with all other series 40s. Yes, it seems that S40 Nokia phones (like 7210) needs proprietary software, but S60 phones (7650, 3650) will work just fine.
Btw: I've searched a "Send by IR" option on N7650, trying to send a picture to my T300. No luck...
