BT trials bluetooth two-in-one fixed/mobile phone

LONDON, July 29 (Reuters) - BT Group Plc BT.L , Britain's largest fixed-line telecoms group, announced on Tuesday the trial of a bluetooth-enabled mobile phone which will operate through fixed-line networks when used in the home or office.
Dubbed the "blue phone", the Ericsson ERICb.ST handset will use "bluetooth" short-range wireless connection technology when used in the home.

The phone represents the latest counter-attack from the fixed-line world as mobile operators eat into their once-steady revenues from voice calls.

"It enables you to use your mobile at home or in the office -- the same mobile that you use when you are outside, but when you use it at home or in the office it will cost you fundamentally the price of a fixed-line call," BT Retail Chief Executive Pierre Danon told reporters on a conference call.

Danon added that the phone would eventually work over WiFi technology, which also provides short-range wireless connections to land lines.

More trials of the blue phone would be conducted before the end of the calendar year, with a full UK consumer and business launch expected by March or April of 2004, Danon said.

BT is still negotiating with mobile operators about which network will carry the service, a spokesman told Reuters.

Sweden's Ericsson pioneered bluetooth technology in the 1990s as a cable replacement between mobiles and peripherals such as headsets. The technology was given away almost for free by Ericsson, and hundreds of companies have embraced it.

About damn time...I thought of this idea like 18 months ago. Same phone number for home and mobile (for ppl that actually WANT a home phone, thats is.)

at least we know now that sony is responsible for the designs of the now sonyericsson phones

additions to the above.

BT is teaming up with T-Mobile (UK) to bring this service, and one of the features is that the handset will bahave as a GSM phone outside the home, and inside will behave as a cordless phone using Bluetooth.

We ericsson are providing the technology, but the handsets in the final version woudl still be SE, (or even nokia, its an open standard).

Ericsson is testing Blip-net (Bleutooth local infotainment point)
in the Hiogumuseum in Japan. Everybody gets a Siemens LOOX Pocket PC when he enters the museum, and the Blipnet knows where you are.
When you are near painting A. You Pocket PC gives you information by Tekst, movies and sound files from that object. It gives you the route to related objects.

In the parlement in Denmark there is the same Blip-net testing.
The building has different zones. In the conference room, his mobile turens to silent and connects to his secretarry. When in his office, the mobile connects throug to his land-phone on his desk.

The weird thing is that Ericsson is testing all this with Nokia 6310 phones.

Ericsson is testing Blipnet in shopping areas, where you get a welcome and a advertise on your mobile, as soon you enter the shop.

Ericsson showed a prototype of this several years ago, but it was one of the projects which were cancelled to cut costs. At least I thought so, but now they seems to changed their mind. Not that I'm complaining though
