I know a little. Docomo, along with J-Phone and Au and maybe Tuka are providors in Japan but their networks are not GSM so I cannot bring my T68i in to Japan and roam with it.
http://www.nttdocomo.com/home.html or the Japanese pages -
http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/index.shtml ( BabelFish can be used to translate )
http://www.babelfish.com/ will tell you about Docomo.
It is also true that a Japanese person cannot bring their mobile phone outside and use it on GSM networks. Their system is called PDC see
http://www.mobilecomms-technology.com/projects/pdc/
I did read that there are two switchable mobile phones. In Japan these are switched to the Japanese sytem when being used in Japan but when you arrive in a 'GSM' country you can switch them to GSM! The two models that I remember were big, not pretty and also about 1500 - 2000 pounds each!
I guess things will change to open Japan up to the global mobile world but of course, they still have to take care of existing customers!
Any additions or corrections to what I have written are welcomed because I am no expert, just have an interest in Japan! A search here in Esato will also reveal more about Japan and mobiles.

maybe you should try
http://www.nttdocomo.com ?
They are a Service Provider in Japan (and some other countries in Asia) like Vodafone/Orange/O2/T-Mobile
They are the founder of Imode a big hit in Japan...
And that was it... they have a joint venture with Hutchison Whampoa in 'Three'.
Imode is a content based on HTML for special designed phones... Like Vodafone Live! is. (Ectually Live! is a clone of Imode) luckely I live in the Netherlands and we have Imode

.
But the phones in our country aren't that good.. well now we have the 3650 as a Imode phone. But we used to have Necs and Toshiba.
And a big advantage of Imode (on the real Imode phones (the 3650 isn't one) but like the Nec N22i) is the Email (called Imail) is coming in to your phone like a sms. And is costs about 3 eurocents to send. You can combine it together with a image and that is about 5 cents....
It's really nice and you have a lot of underground websites(not official website (made by amateurs) who are placed in the content).
