> T610 advice - lots of questions

Hi all, I'm a T39 users and I'm getting all eager over the T610 (no flip - which is a shame... but ya can't have everything). I'm after some advice.
I'm on Orange contract, and can't do an upgrade for another 11 months so I need to actually buy myself one. I can buy sim free (£250)or I could buy an Orange PAYG (£200). What customisations have Orange done? I've seen a lot of moans about the Vodafone Live stuff being awful but I've not heard anything about Orange. And how easy is it to remove the Orange customisations?
I've also seen stuff about the "hiss problem" and various other teething troubles (which i remember fro the early days of my T39) so what software or build number should I be looking for to avoid this? (I've been looking on e-bay, but I'm a bit wary)
And..... is there any news about when the blue and red T610s will be available in the UK? The different coloured T39 NEVER seemed to have made it here, hoping that won't be the same with the T610. If I get a coulured one from abroad are there any compatibility, lanuguages, or guarentee problems?
Sorry.. I know that's a lot of questions, and I have done some searches of the forums first... but if anyone could help with the latest info I'd be grateful.

In my opinion, you'd be better of getting a sim-free model. Just about every provider has customised the phone in one way or another, and to get them removed is going to cost you £20 or so. Then to unlock it is another £20. Why not save yourself the hassle?
The coloured models are apparently slowly leaking their way into shops as I type this, but personally I haven't seen them (though I haven't been looking too seriously). The silver model is going to be cheaper anyway, as it's been out longer. You can buy coloured housings on ebay at the moment too, so that would be one option for you.
As far as that dreaded "hiss", if you get a week23 model or later you should be alright. Mine had it, I sent it away, and now it's a-ok. At any rate, I'd be surprised if many shops were still selling pre-wk23 models anyway, since so many people were returning them.

the vodaphone and o2 phones are all unlocked as far as i know.
BTW - carphone warehouse will match any deal in other shops and they are very helpful - they will supply software upgrade in-store to RL1 (this fixes the crackle problem on the HBH series of BT headsets)

cakepanda, just a couple of points...
Vodafone live phones (which the T610 is) are all locked unfortunately. Don't know about O2.
Also, R1L doesn't fix the BT headset crackle but it does make it much less noticeable.

Thanks for the responses - a £15 contract on 02 with a free T610 sounds like a brilliant deal.. can't see anything like that anywhere else.
I'm teetering on the edge of going out now and getting an Oramge PAYG one cos I know where I can get one and I want to play!
Either that or wait for CPW to get their stock in.

Well I've gone and got myself an Orange one.. got an Orange contract anyway. Doesn't seem to be too much customisation. Can turn off the Oange theme but the 1st two items in the menu reference orange... still at early playing stages.

Their very first models were Week23 ones (no hiss), as they delayed their stock until the problem had been fixed.
And apart from the first icon being an orange icon, the orange square on the case, and the orange pics, there's very little difference from the Sim-Free T610s. (Much much better than the Vodafone mess).
Also, by getting an Orange one, you know that it works (properly) with the Orange network, and all the Orange data accounts for WAP, etc, are already installed.
One word of warning: Don't master-reset the phone unless you really have to. You don't remove any of the pre-defined items, but several annoying things happen (also happens on Sim-Free T610s):
The "Memory Status --> My Sounds" stops working, and shows the memory size as 0kb.
The links to SonyEricsson "More Themes" and "More Games" gets wiped, so that you always end up at the wallpaper site. (There's no other link to the themes, so this is very annoying).
PS: If you use the Orange Wap "Find" feature on a T610, you can view maps for the "Your Nearest" things... which is really cool. I saw a poster at the train station advertising this
