Hi. I'm in the market for a new phone — my poor SideKick has been excellent, but service as of late has been seriously lacking. No more software updates to fix stupid bugs, still no way to get apps you write onto your SideKick, AIM randomly stops working for a day at a time, etc. I was looking at the T610 or T616, but my friend, who has a T610, said signal quality was iffy at best. Since I live in an area with a somewhat diminished signal strength, iffy probably isn't good enough. I heard the T616 has much better reception strength than the T610, but I was wondering how compatible the two models are — Id est, does the same firmware updated work on both models? If SE releases an update that addresses the Java/sockets/data issue, I don't want to have to wait longer than T610 users. Thanks for all of your help, and I'm sorry if this question has been asked before. I looked on SE's site and did a forum search here and didn't see it.

i thought the only difference between the two (function-wise) is that t616 operates the 850 and the t610 does 900, while both of course support the other two bands.

I just got an unlocked t616 for free with cingular activation. So far the reception seems to be exactly the same as my unlocked t68is (the AT&T one).

The only real difference is banding (850 versus 900) but that means a slightly different antenna tuning and probably a different board. That means the same software for the T610 will not work on a T616.

So it's true that the reception between the two would be different? If so, wouldn't it be a negligible difference? Or does it depend on the bands? Bleh...

The new firmware for T610 is R1LXXX while the new one for the T616 is R1B011... The old one for the T610 was R1A081 while it was R1A054 for the 616... That tells it, right?

The first two posts should give you the answer:
