Ok, I've tried searching past threads but I cant seem to find how to have IE on a laptop use GPRS on a T39 via IR. It's straight forward enough using a gsm connection since there is an actual number dialed. Do I set up a new dial up connection for GPRS? If so what number do I tell IE to dial.

@i30ipaq, i've already answered your private message. Not sure how much help I'll be since the set up is very provider specific. Just be more specific when you post a question and you'll get a lot of help on this board. This post was posted from a T39

GPRS is a data transmission technology optimized for datacom services such as wireless Internet/intranet and multimedia services. It is also known as GSM-IP (Internet Protocol) because it will connect users directly to Internet Service Providers.

It is a way of connecting to the network and vice versa to get information faster.

Steps to take advantage of GPRS:

1. Call your service provider and ask them to activate GPRS for your number (you have to be a plan holder... GPRS is not available for Pre-paid yet)

2. Set up your phone (assuming you are using t68)
GPRS Settings (WAP over GPRS) for Ericsson units (R520/T39/T65/T68)

1. Go to Settings then Data comm.
2. Select Pref.service then choose GPRS and GSM
3. Select Data accounts then Add account
3.1 Choose GPRS data
3.2 Name: WAP-GPRS
3.3 APN: www.globe.com.ph
3.4 User id:
3.5 Password:
4. Go to WAP services then select WAP settings
5. Select Profile1
5.1 Rename: GPRS
5.2 Chg homepage
Title: Globe
Address: http://www.globe.com.ph/globe.wmlc
5.3 Save to: Current profile
5.4 Gateway
5.4.1 IP Settings:
Connect using: WAP-GPRS
IP Address: 192.029.102.103
User Id:
Password
Data mode: Connectionless
Security: off
Show images: On
Response timer: 150
5.4.2 Change type: select IP
6. To initiate WAP over GPRS go to WAP services, then choose Globe
(here you are using the wap browser of your phone via gprs... notice that connection is faster than wap over gsm)

3. If you would want to utilize other devices to connect to the net via gprs (like palm, notebook or even your pc) then these would have to find a way to connect to your phone (via cable or infrared). You would utilize your existing software (Explorer, Netscape, blazer, palmscape, Avantgo, eudora etc) but create another connection (dial-up networking if windows or "Connection" if palm) using the above parameters.

4. Setting up GPRS phone with a notebook computer

To set up GPRS phone with notebook computer for internet access:
1.) Install the modem drivers for your phone. For Ericsson T68, program is found in the XtndConnect PC for Ericsson program downloadable from the Sony Ericsson website.
2.) Install the modem by adding it under the Control Panel - Modem
3.) Create a dial-up profile. Leave the Username and Password blank. Under the Phone number, type in *99**#

5.GPRS SETTINGS FOR PALM
Using your Palm to connect to the Internet using Globe's GPRS
service:
A. Make a connection:
1 Under System|Prefs|Connection, click "New".

2. Give it a name (ex. GPRS R520 IR)
- Connect to: Modem
- Via: Infrared
- Dialing: TouchTone
- Volume: (doesn't matter)

3. Click "Details"
- Speed: 115,200 bps
- Flow Ctl: Automatic
- Init String: (Leave it blank)

4. Click "Ok"

5. Click "Ok" once more

B. Create a Network Service:
1. Go to System|Prefs|Network,
2. Create a new service (Command+N, or menu "New")
3. Give it a name (ex. Globe GPRS)
4. Username: globe
5. Password: globe
6. Connection: (select the one you just created)
7. Phone: *99***1#
8. Click "Details" and make sure the following is set:
- Connection type: PPP
- Idle timeout: Never
- Query DNS: checked
- IP Address: Automatic
9. Click "OK"

C. Connect to the Internet:
1. Switch ON your phone's IR
2. Postion the two devices' IR pointing to each other
3. On the Palm (under System|Prefs|Network), select the Service you intend to use (ex. Globe GPRS)
4. Click Connect
5. Press the scroll down button to view the status of the
connection

6. You should see the following:
- Intializing
- Dialing Globe GPRS *99***1#
- Signing on
- Established
