Have just been given this laptop notebook as a present. It's a Dell Inspiron 8500. Here are the specs:
Windows XP, 2.2. khz, 2GB RAM, maximum extended memory, inbuilt broadcom 10/100 ethernet network card/56k v.92 modem, firewire, 2 high-speed USB ports, 15.4 inch screen with 16 million colours, nVidiaŽ GeForceTM 4 4200 Go video controller with 64MB DDR video memory (whatever that is
), infrared, 24X CD-RW Drive (24x read, 24x CD-R write, 10X CDRW rewrite), Bluetooth wireless, Norton Anti-Virus and all that jazz...

What do you think? Any good? I'm not a great expert with laptops/PC's -- the main selling-point for me is infrared/Bluetooth so I can sync info and transfer photos -- but any comments appreciated.

Make sure you run Norton to get all the latest updates for viruses. Like you I am no computer expert, So can not realy say what I think of the specs, but sounds good. I see you were asking about the apple mac in another thread, if it is brand new can you not take it back and see if they would exchange it for an apple.

My Father got it through his job, so... unlikely! He gets it free of charge as his 'work laptop' thanks to luxurious company policy and being the boss, etc
, but gives it to me. As a result, it has to be able to run all of the company's PC-based programmes... they're very anti-Apple.
I'm still saving up for that iBook though
But for now, am happy that my new iPod works with firewire and Windows MusicMatch.

Well... looking through the spec its fairly hefty! I've never seen 2GB ram in a notebook (I have 1 Gb).
I have often considered dell myself but generally they have been quite bulky and heavy laptops so I tend to stick to superslim Sony Vaios in the sub 2kg range but they still come well equipped with CD-RW/DVD combo etc etc.
I guess if you are not carrying it around alot (every day!) like me then that is not so important.
Is it your birthday or something?

My current laptop is a Vaio. A very old one, though -- Windows 98, tragic
Can't use any of my favourite software programmes on it, so use my partner's XP comp instead.
Well, yes, it is my birthday soon but the reason I'm getting it is posted below. Lucky me.

I couldn't live without my iPod - it goes with me everywhere!!
iTunes for Windows is due out towards the end of this year, so you can ditch MusicMatch then!!

I just lost all my songs, too. Uploaded CD onto computer at my parents' house and wiped the lot. My 500 songs are stored on partner's computer, which has the worm... so I'm hoping that they're still there, and that the patch will work!
Going on holiday tomorrow and I need them!
Oh, man, am doing the SE site flash P800 tour. Want one of these so much it hurts... :S

Assuming Apple put all the features of the Mac version in the Windows version, it will Auto-Sync or manual sync, whichever you prefer. Like all Apple stuff, it just works, no faffing about with configuration, drivers, conflicts etc.

You'll also be able to use the Apple iTunes Music Store which is the most successful on-line digital music store ever (even though only 3% of computer users can currently buy from it - Mac OS X users in the US)

The Inspiron that you are talking about is pretty heavy and gets pretty hot. Very hot. If you have a choice try to get a Centrino instead. But hey, still good.
I miss my ibook. I tripped over my cat and smashed the screen
Now I have a Dell Centrino. Quiet as anything, but gimmie Mac OS anyday. All of the comps here on campus went down like flies because of the worm. Made me think - if only I still had my ibook...
