Orange will be changing their care scheme on the 28th of this month.
This will mean no reduction after a year of paying, currently it goes down 50p a year: not much I hear you say but:
THERE WILL BE A £15 CHARGE EVERYTIME YOU HAVE A REPLACEMENT PHONE!!!
So this is basically like an excess on a car insurance policy!
This is what I have heard direct from Orange, and there is to be a letter sent out later this month.
I think we should start up a pertition and send it through to those bumbling guys at Orange.
I have to say they have no one but themselves to blame for their needs to increase prices, they have been offering so much more than any other network for years, which is great but ig you don't tell anyone about it WHAT'S THE POINT!!! So now they are left with higher prices and less exclusive services, I find it hard to see how they are going to continue to attract new custom.

From the Orange website:
Orange Care - Costs
If you have created Your Plan, Orange Care is available for £5 a month or annually if you prefer at a charge of £60 per year. And if you pay as you go the annual charge is £50.
Remember, the reconnection charge to Orange, the transfer of all your Service Plan details and the replacement of your original phone number is free.
Orange Care includes 12 month insurance and 12 month warranty which are subject to terms, conditions and exclusions as stated in your user guide. Please read these carefully.
Orange Care payments will be shown as separate items on your bill each month. Insurance premiums are exempt from VAT and include Insurance Premium Tax at the current rate.
There will be an adminstration fee of £15 for all claims made from 26 October 2003
Not good.

Just phoned Orange for clarification. The £15 charge
will apply to lost, stolen and damaged phones. As yet they're not sure about replacement phones due to handset faults.
Also, if you're already on Orange Care, the charge won't apply until your current policy runs out and you renew it.
Watch this space I guess.....

The case of it not applying until it runs out means:
If you are currently on a 12 month care package due to new contract or upgrade then this will not take effect until that runs out, but if you are already paying monthly then it will take effect as of your next billing date - right?

About time too...
I've only ever had my phone stolen/lost once in 5 years, and I'd have been happy to pay £15 excess for the service Orange offer.
I know people who lob their phones in the air / set fire to them / drive over them, because they can, and they know they won't have to pay an excess.
I think this is a good thing (apart from the £5 / month which is unfortunate, but not a surprise).

I'm not sure. The way it was explained to me on the phone was (using my own case as an example) - my Orange Care runs until December and I'm currently paying it monthly. Therefore if I have to claim before December I won't have to pay.
After December if I renew my Orange Care and have to claim, the claim will be subject to the £15 charge.
@bossjohn: I agree it's a good idea to stop people abusing the system. But it's not good if the charge applies to replacement handsets because of faults. I'd have been charged £45 because of duff phones through no fault of my own.

I wouldn't go that far but as I have said, Orange users have reaped tonnes of benefits that no one else knew about for ages and if Orange had advertised just some of those features they would have stolen thousands of customers from T-mob, O2 and Voda and would have been able to keep to their great features and services.

@Fritz - agreed, it would be totally unreasonable for O to charge £15 for replacements - I've had occasions where someone I know has had to have their phone replaced 5 times in quick succession because it's faulty - obviously Orange ship refurbs, and don't always pick up the faults.
Orange are turning in to a money hungry company I feel - not so much because of this, but other things too...
- They've recently 'simplified' roaming costs (i.e. rounded them all up)
- They're Your Plan tarrifs are a rip off
- Wildfire is being axed
- Everyphone is being axed in October - I rely on this for Line 2 on my P800
- They're trying to ween people off the good old tarrifs like ED50
And there's more - it's all negative. I think I'll move to three when my contract's up.
