just in the interests of sharing...
I've been using various Nokia phones since about 1991 when I defected from my trusty MicroTac, but I've just bought my first SE phone - a T610 - to replace a Nokia 7650 that failed in a big way.... 2 weeks out of warrenty
I'd thought about getting another 7650 but it's just a bit too bulky for comfort, and as I need Bluetooth and an MMS capable phone (didn't care if it was via the phone or talking to a Clie) there was nothing in the current Nokia line-up that really suits, so the T610 got it's day in the sun !
It's a great little phone and I can see why so many people are pleased with it, but it's certainly in need of a bit of polish if it's going to keep ahead of the competition.
There are a couple of niggles that I've found in the first few hours that, if other people find them a problem, maybe SE will address....

- Setting Speed Dials is like wading through tar. You have to edit the order that names are stored on the SIM. Apart from the fact it takes forever and it's way (and I mean) way clumsier than it needs to be... have they not looked at the "assign speed dial" option on a Nokia from within the address book (shock horror !)

- they joystick is a little, shall we say, over-sensitive... would like to be able to personalise it, or at least tweak it.

- The default softkeys, and menu directional items can't be over-ridden. For instance in my Nokia I could decide what the two default softkeys where. Logically the four joystick directions should be adjustable as well. I may be missing something here, or it could be coz the phone is a VodaLive (purchased outright) cripple-ware version

- Bluetooth has no timeout, but IrDA can be asked to shutdown after ten mins to save battery.

- Silly thing, but does anyone ever use line2 on their phone ? Would prefer to drop the little "1" on the phone icon !

- Camera seems a little disapointing. It's a .3mp pixel very similar to some of the Clies, but they produce a better image. It's a neat toy though, even with the Camera button in the worst place for a right-handed user (unless you take a lot of self portraits)

- No ability to redefine the Internet button. Would like to swap it for the camera button (or anything else)

- Silly thing... I spell Organiser with an "S" not a "Z" !

- There's a bunch of usability things playing with the address book that's just a working paradigm thing, and I imagine a few days of using it, it'll seem as natural as using the Nokias (why can't I be looking at someones entry in the phone book, point the camera at them and add a picture, rather than having to go through about 5 steps to achieve the same aim ?).... SE have access to Symbian, Nokia phones, PalmOS devices (they make great Clies) so it surprises me that some of these things are not a little slicker.

Thanks for listening ! I'll try and keep future posts a little, um, briefer !

Hi and welcome to Esato, another fellow Aussie! (don't forget to say hi in the Australian where are you forum!).

I have to agree with some comments like that about the speed dial, and yes the joystick can take some getting used to, but have to disagree with some others.

bluetooth consumes much less power than IR so there is no need to turn it off and on all the time. Since my first T68 through to T610 now I have always had BT on constantly and am very happy with battery life.

I'm guessing you have a SIM card with line 2 capability which is why you see the 1. I don't see that and have never had a SIM with the capability.

I think the cam is fine and remember the clie has a much better screen on which to display the pics it takes.

Assuming you are talking about T9, both my T610s spell organiser either way... with S or Z.

This might be a stupid question, but is it possible to use CommuniCams with the T610? If so, isn't the picture quality better? This message was posted from a WAP device

So you DO can connect it physically, but not virtually? How about other accessories? This message was posted from a WAP device

Hi masser - I'm based on the Gold Coast. If you've seen Big Brother (and more importantly the website) you can kinda get a clue as to why I'm on the Goldie !

I agree that BT is a minimal drain (esp compared to IrDA) but with all the other radio emissions going on, I'd like the choice ! It's a side-effect of being a control freak I guess !

The organizer spelling is on the actual icon menu (esp given it's an Aussie VodefoneLive cripple-ware version I'd expect them to get the spelling correct !)

Although the screen on the Clie is a lot better (after all, it's about 8 times the size) I guess the issue is... what's the intended use of the pictures... I had been using my Nokai 7650 to grab (VGA quality) snaps when working on various things and actually use them (both on web and some pics from the phone have gone into print)... the .3mp on both my NR70V and the T610 are not quite up to that job However I fully accept that as an MMS (to phone not email) they're fine. I just hate the gradual pixellation that's happening to the world (and on the web) and being accepted !

Yeah I get to the gold coast a couple of times a year. The kids love wet'n'wild and movie world.

You can always turn BT on and off from the more menu from the default screen (but not I think of it I think you lose that menu on voda branded phones)

Yeah you are right! never noticed. Organizer label is the same on my unbranded T610s

Hmm.. the T610 doesn't have a 0.3 Mpixel camera, it is a 0.1 Mpixel camera. The T610 has a camera resolution of 352x288.

Apart from the fact it takes forever and it's way (and I mean) way clumsier than it needs to be... have they not looked at the "assign speed dial" option on a Nokia from within the address book (shock horror !)

speed dial on SE works in different way. Jus press and hold 2 for name beginning with a or b or c and then scroll through the names you want. Press and hold 3 for def etc...

- they joystick is a little, shall we say, over-sensitive... would like to be able to personalise it, or at least tweak it.

ok, this is a good idea.

- The default softkeys, and menu directional items can't be over-ridden. For instance in my Nokia I could decide what the two default softkeys where. Logically the four joystick directions should be adjustable as well. I may be missing something here, or it could be coz the phone is a VodaLive (purchased outright) cripple-ware version

this one is good too. maybe engineers in SE will change their mind about it. this is a software related, so it might be implemented in the next software updates. keep your eyes open and check regularly.

- Bluetooth has no timeout, but IrDA can be asked to shutdown after ten mins to save battery.

you can turn off bluetooth via right softkey easily without have to scrolling between menus.

- Silly thing, but does anyone ever use line2 on their phone ? Would prefer to drop the little "1" on the phone icon !

it is your SIM card that have the ability to provide alternate line service.

- Camera seems a little disapointing. It's a .3mp pixel very similar to some of the Clies, but they produce a better image. It's a neat toy though, even with the Camera button in the worst place for a right-handed user (unless you take a lot of self portraits)

i am a left handed. and yes the camera is dissapointing. better t310 with mca-25.

- No ability to redefine the Internet button. Would like to swap it for the camera button (or anything else).

same comment on previous.

i never use a nokia so i cant comment on this.
