any chance of this working.. mac has USB ports which work fine.. just dont know what software I can use to download the pictures etc. from the phone...
I dont want to have to buy a whole new computer just to get my phone working!

(bluetooth) dongles that supports the macos you use?
(The usb cable won't allow you to send stuff from phone->pc)

havent found any bluetooth adaptor that will work with mac os8. Presumably the mac would have to have some kind of driver to support bluetooth that I am sure os8 will not have. Even if I did get a bluetooth adaptor working, would I not need some kind of software on the mac to trasnfer the files or would the mac just see the phone as another device, like another computer?

Mac OS 8 and 9 do not have Bluetooth Support. You'll need to upgrade to Mac OS X which has great Bluetooth support built-in.
I've yet to see any software for Mac OS 9 for transferring pictures via a cable... they all seem to use OS X
