Hello people,
I'm moving to New York from England in October, and I was wondering if it's worth taking my T68i with me. Will I be able to use it with any of the service providers there?

Sure; several of the US mobile providers work on the GSM/GPRS system. I am here in NY and I use T-Mobile.

Sounds good. Do they do SIM only packages? I.E. I just buy the SIM card to put in the phone, and don't have to buy a separate new cell phone?

I think so; go to their web site
www.t-mobile.com and send them a query! You can have it all sorted out by the time that you move. If you have any problems, let me know and I will do some snooping for you...

I use tmobile inthe US and they do not care if you want to use their phone. Just get a sim card and you will be fine.

I just checked with T-Mobile and they said that they would certainly sell you a sim card and voice or voice/data plan without selling you a phone. Makes sense, as it is just more money for them...

Make sure to get your service from an independent dealer (there are tons of them in NYC) or through amazon.com. Do not get the service from the actual T-Mobile, AT&T, or Cingular store as they will charge you more -- the best deals are through the small, independent dealers.
With any of the providers (except for AT&T's GoPhone or however it's called) you will have to sign a one-year contract. When I moved to NYC from Europe I brought my T68 with me, but got a free phone anyway. After three months they will unlock it for you - so you can choose which one to sell. The best part with T-Mobile is that if your phone breaks down they will send you a free replacement phone as long as you are within one year of your agreement.
If you do not plan on stay within the US for a year, do not sign these contracts - go for the AT&T's no-contract plan or one of the pre-paid deals available.
