> How to be sure that your computer has IR
Bookmark topic
I got a pretty advanced laptop, from fujisiemens (2.8 ghz).
So I think that it should have IR, but I cant find it. Do you have to activate it from somewhere in your computer, it says Ir in wirelles connection in the controlpannel. And in the devicemanager. Does that means that the laptop has IR?
Because in my old desktop it says also Ir in the device manager.

It probably means your PC has IR. You can look around the sides (usually the right side) to see if you see the IR eye.
You might have to activate IR port from BIOS to enable it, if it's not already enabled.
You can turn on IR on your phone, and move it slowly around the PC to see if the PC detects it.

...or you could read the manual and
a) see if it has IR and...
b) where it is!
My last two Sony vaio's with windows XP pro didn't have IR. I had to buy an
IR dongle!

It seems silly when they leave such simple and paractical little things out like the IR. My Dell Inspiron 8500 came without a PS/2 port despite being the size of a bus... am sure they could've found somewhere to put it!! So easy for just sticking an external keyboard or mouse on
I had to buy a USB mouse!
Fortunately it has built in

so i never used the I/R until recently - no point- but I did find that i had to go and enable it first in the BIOS at startup. We were trying to send a midi file to a Nokia but didn't have much luck because I couldn't find a simple send option in Win XP Pro - - the bluetooth option is there but i fear i will have to look harder for an IR option. Sadly not in Dell's manual...
EDIT - This bit is simple and i only just worked it out. Activate IR on the phone and put it near the computer - XP then automatically detects and tells you how to transfer files!!

I just don't expect computers to be as clever as they are sometimes!
Anyway, I had to advise my friend to come back when she had a

phone or at least

!!! I am useless

can anybody here that is sure that your computer doesn't have IR, look in the devicemanager, and see if there says IR.
Cause I find it strange that in my 4 year old computer it says IR there...
I think I have lost my manual so I can't look it up.

Mine does not have IR, and it does not show IR in the device manager.
[EDIT]
If it shows IR in device manager, chances are - you have IR. As I mentioned earlier you might have to go into BIOS to activate it.

I have ir on a very old packard bell pentium 2 - even though after upgrading it to windows 98 it doesn't work properly.
It is usually in the control panel in older window models:

I also have an old Packard Bell P2 450 mhz
And I have the infrared logo in devicemanager.
