Hey i was just wondering what people think of the new 3G phones and the network "3"?? Can you see yourselves with one of those phones in 12 months, if not why?? what would be the ideal phone for you. I think the p800 style would be nice as all the 3G phones seem to be quite chunky at the moment so think of the p800 but with a small camera in the front aswell. What do you lot think???

Hi there.

I have a p800, and I also just got a e606 from 3.
I only use it when my freetime runs out on my P800/T-mobile account.
Even in my very light use of it I think it is quite an unreliable network.

1 in 4 calls cannot be completed first time, people tell me they cannot call in on my 3 line, I feel the phone getting hot in my pocket, and even with only making a dozen short calls, the battery dies after 12 hours.
I have also been cutoff mid convo numerous times.
If they weren't so cheap I would be furious.
It's funny because when I first got the phone I was impressed, and thought that maybe in10-12 months time I may even consider making that my primary line.
With my 5 weeks experience I would say no way jose.

It's a poor phone. I also got a NEC e606. Though I got three batteries with it. The large battery which makes the phone even bigger (hate it) I got battery life for about 48 hours if I don't use it. I tried video call and that is smooth video I must say, sound is also quite good. And the vids you can make with it should work on the P800. The performance overall is quite ok, smooth menues though connectic to 3's wap or whatever it is, is slow. I think you can have 100 12sec mp4 with video. And the memory is at 32mb. Ehm what else... oh yeah can send MMS using Vodafone (P800) to it, but it don't always get everything. Like if I send sound and picture I sometimes get a blank mms and sometimes just the picture or sound. I can't send mms to my Vodafone. 3 says it's because they don't guarantee them to get through to other networks. Same with calls from 3 to other networks. But 3 to landlines is quite good... atleast for me.

Its always good to see a company ironing out all the bugs and flaws before releasing a product, isn't it?

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas what is planned in the 3g area for the future? If all it is is video calling and maybe quicker wap or gprs then I can't really see it taking off.

OK there are the premiership goals and stuff but you have to pay quite a lot for that and if you have sky sports news or watch match of the day you don't really need it anyway. Unless you could see the goals while the game was still in progress which I doubt.

So what is going to be the real selling point that will make us sit up and say, I got to have one of those!!!

The main selling point is quite simple. Its new, they're shiny (well a bit), they sound cool (work with me here people) and people with far too much cash to know what to do with, will sail on into a CPW and throw the cash at the man behind the desk, perhaps knocking his glasses off, they will then scarper with a 3G phone tucked away in a large box, with a team of mates behind with more large boxes to carry the extra batteries.
In all seriousness, they no doubt will improve, and perhaps by this time next year, they will have a decent following, a sense of reliability and be able to fit in a pocket without the user having to add a small wieght to his other pocket for ballast.

Cheers

All i'll say is, early 90's brick! My first phone back in the depths of time, a motorola in 1995 and my phone then was SMALLER than a 3G phone, oh and it was the cheapest phone on the market!

I'll stick with a P800, who needs to see the person your talking to anyway, surely if your phoning them you know what they look like! Seems like a case of wasteing bandwidth for the sake of it. Anyhoo, imagine the embarassment if you were using it with a bluetooth earpiece and the phone was in your pocket (assuming you have pockets big enough to fit a 3G phone into), i can picture the conversation now! *Hello, yeah i'm still not feeling well enough to come to work today...........* *Can i recommends that you contact your phone provider i think someones stole it, it looks like its moving about inside someones pocket, i swear i saw a £1 coin there, and thats definately an old hairy polo!*

Vodafone are due to launch their own 3g system around march/april next year - this will be called vodafone live 3. As a voda employee i have been able to have a go on our test 3g network and i can tell you there will be absolutely no comparison between the quality of our 3g network and services compared to what 3 are doing at the mo. I cant go in to too much detail obviously, but lets just say that you wont believe how good live 3 is when it is launched!! This message was posted from a T610

Well, I'd say hang on for the next batch of handsets.

Having been one of the first 200 employees of 3, and having designed for them for the last two years prior to launch, I can tell you the following:

- The first devices are really tech testers, they were developed by their manufacturers (NEC and Motorola) in a rush to make it to 3's expected launch date. They were always targeted at the "early adopter" types who are famous for putting up with a lot of crap for the love of new tech. I myself have an e606 I never use (and a p800 that I always use). I personally think they should never have been released at all.

- The network is still teething, so it's naturally going to have a lot of problems for at least the nesxt year. Good news is, some good people are working hard on it to bring it up to a decent standard.

- The "Wap" services are actually XHTML delivered over 3G, and when you can actually get to them they're actually really cool and dead easy to use (I should know, I worked on them!)

So give it time, sit back and watch. For those of you in the UK, remember how Orange's service was when it started! Also, GSM technology took 10 years to become mainstream, GPRS three years so far (and most people still dont use it), so 3G will take a while still. But in the end, it'll be as ubiquitous as GSM is today.

Once the tech's out of the bag, you can't put it back insid;, new tech eventually matures and becomes so commonplace people forget it's even there. But in five years I very much doubt anyone will even consider getting a phone which doesn't even do "simple" video calling

By the way, I am not speaking for 3, partially because I don't work there anymore and partially because I'm here to express my own opinion. If I sound like I'm pimping them is mostly because I really do believe that, although crap now, the tech I helped bring to market is really going to change things in subtle but pervasive ways.

Watch this space...
