Hi all, just a question if anyone can give me info plse...

Basically I keep hearing about how crap the java on the t610 is and that it doesn't support sockets, and therefore doesn't support IM even though there are IM menus (not usable) in certain areas of the phone.

I've gathered that IM (Instant Messanger) allows corresponding with mates on an IM application such as MSN using GPRS, so therefore txting/having conversations is cheaper depending on your GPRS billing. If I'm wrong plse correct me.

What I want to know though is what exactly is socket support? Does it mean allowing Java applications other than games to be downloaded to the phone? If so can someone give me examples plse other than IM?

I seen lots of ppl say the Java in T610 wont allow you to communicate with other ports then wap/html port 80
but I haven't seen anyone explain how if thats is true
http://www.reqwireless.com/emailviewer.html can work on the T610
as it uses port 25/110/443 and perhaps other ports as well (you can choose port but i havent tried it on other ports).

T610 supports http protocol (not just port 80).
T610 supports UDP (connectionless protocol)
T610 does not support sockets, which means that the phone is not able to establish raw connections over TCP/IP which is requiered for software like MSN/IRC/ICQ/peer-2-peer games/you name it...

...However, an MSN client could connect to the MSN network via an HTTP gateway.

look on a thread previously and you will see there is a version of messenger that works just fine with the t610.. I think its call Umsg or something like that... its a little buggy but works very well in general. I havent tried it for long periods of time though
